What is it?
It's a Midwestern phenomenon. A restaurant that is usually packed on Friday for all you can eat fish fry and Saturday for prime rib.
They usually feature an enormous salad bar with several unusual items, and are known for the dip they serve with veggies at the table, or a house salad dressing, or a special kind of potato or rice, or a special side dish or dessert.
You should arrive starving, because you will be very full when you leave!
They also usually have bars, indoors or outside in the summer, that serve brandy old fashioneds and bottled and tap beers.

A supper club is a restaurant that traditionally is open only for dinner, and possibly only Thursday through Sunday at that. A supper club often serves steak, seafood, fish fry (Fried fish dinner), and the like. It will always have a lounge/bar and serve alcohol. They tend to be a little old-fashioned (dark wood paneling, 70s light fixtures), but that is what makes them interesting. They are higher end (no burgers or grilled cheese), but not fancy (jeans are ok). Every local has their favorite supper club. Hope this helps!
For a brief time there was a supper club in Chicago. It was the Canoe club and it was in Lakeview I think on Halstead. You knew it was a supper club because it had all the thing described above, except it was open all week. Supper clubs also have relish trays with carrot sticks, pickles, and olives... ; ) Pam
One of the most awesome supper clubs on planet earth is "The Pine Tree" supper club on hwy 54 between Waupaca and New London. Prime rib is like getting a side of beef laid on your table, sea food to die for and cocktails you can actually taste the booze in!
They have a great liver pate and cheese dip with their relish tray as well as a basket of warm rolls!
Brandy Old Fashion sweet with mushrooms please!
The Laurel near hear does the liver pate and relish trays. Also popovers with dinner. So yummy. I really miss the Bolo Inn and Supper Club that used to be here, they sold out and now it's a grocery store in it's place. I miss the popovers, other good food and atmosphere there.
Yummy - thanks!
