Best Place to Visit

My husband and I are planning on going to Wisconsin over Labor Day weekend and need some suggestions. We would like to go somewhere we have not been yet which encludes Lake Geneva, Door County, Madison, and Milwaukee. We are looking for outdoor activities (hiking, biking, canoeing, etc.) We are coming the Suburban Chicago and would prefer somewhere that is not crowded. We also would like to keep the travel time under 6 or 7 hours. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

You could try Monroe and New Glarus south of Madison. They are nice small towns, lots of parks and the Sugar River bike trail.

You could also try Mineral Point/ Dodgeville and Spring Green west of Madison. That area has lots of history and parks.

You could also try Plymouth, north of Milwaukee. Plymouth is a nice small town and has quick access to the Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest.

Sheboygan, on Lake Michigan is a little bigger than the other towns I recommended. Kohler Andre State Park is really nice, if the weather warms up a little.

Charming areas, great scenery and wonderful for outdoor activities like biking:

New Glarus/Mt. Horeb/Monroe--very scenic, interesting towns, good biking

www.chaletlandhaus.com lodging right on the Sugar River Trail. We just sent a family member here for a night as he's an avid biker. He loved the area and the biking and plans to return.

Trails in the area info.:

Badger State Trail: http://www.badger-trail.com/

http://www.badger-trail.com/sugar_river.htm (New Glarus area)

Military Ridge Trail:

…state.wi.us/org/… (Mount Horeb, Blue Mounds, and several other areas)

I would consider areas like Lake Geneva and Door County to be on the busier side. We were to these areas in summer and it wasn't too busy/crowded. Hope this helps you!~

The Woodruff/Minocqua/Lac du Flambeau area has lots to do and is about a 6 hour drive from Aurora; weather forecast is looking great for this weekend!

f you decided on Lac du Flambeau area, then your choices abound! Flambeau area has a nice Casino and good restaurants … and nice, beautiful, chain of lakes!! Minocqua is only a few minutes away, so shopping, restaurants, and entertainment, if you choose, are an easy drive.

Add to your list canoeing and biking out of Boulder Jct., fishing out of the Manitowish or Flambeau chains .. with animals everywhere but maybe look at Powell Wildlife Area with dinner at Smokies (if reopened). If you choose to look at the Manitowish area (we have a home there so we DO have a preference), there are MANY lodging places available depending on how much you choose to spend and what you wish to do. Chippewa Resort ($$$) down to the family cabin style facilities ($) which are certainly available this time of year! If interested, I will gladly help out with possible lodging!!

GOOD DECISION!!

There's a few motels in Minocqua, Lake of the Torches casino has a hotel and there are resorts nearby as well. Whitehaven B&B is on Hwy "F". Powell Marsh up in Manitowish is great, there's a pig roast in Minocqua this weekend, as well as a car show. Hope you have a great weekend!
