A few days in Wisconsin

We are currently in the early stages of planning a trip to the US for this September / October, and as my husband is a life long Green Bay Packers fan (no idea why the Packers by the way, we're both from the UK!) we are thinking of including a few days in Wisconsin before continuing on to Chicago then possibly up to Toronto to visit family there.

We haven't yet confirmed dates but would be looking at some time in late September / early October, to include a Sunday as if possible he would love to actually get to a Packers game. Depending on what else we decide to do during our trip, we would probably have 3-5 days to spend in the area.

We would most likely be flying into Chicago and picking up a hire car at O'Hare. As a rough circular route I was thinking of something along the lines of Chicago - Milwaukee - Green Bay - Madison then back to Chicago, or the same route in reverse depending on what day we choose to fly in . I don't however know much about what else there is to do in the area that might be worth a visit. I've read bits about Wisconsin Dells and Lake Geneva - would either or both of these also be worth including on the route &/or as an additonal stop for a night or two?

Any suggestions as to what we could do / where we could think about staying around this area of Wisconsin would be much appreciated. Hubbie will I'm sure be wanting to drag me on a tour of Lambeau Field and to the Packers Hall of Fame as well as going to a game so something not football related would be good!

Also before he gets too excited about going - would game tickets be easy to get hold of or are we talking impossible?

Thanks!

possibles: Chicago, Lake Geneva, Milwaukee, towns along the way to peruse on the way up to Green Bay then from Green Bay Door County is so close I'd recommend seeing that. Wisconsin Dells and Madison are both nice in their own right but by that time you miss some of the fun of the warm season and enjoying the waterpark experience of Wisconsin Dells. Madison is a worthwhile stop but I think if you're that close to Door County you may want to consider that. What other things are of interest to you in your travels?

My first thought was to also recommend Door County. Door County is a peninsula (Wisconsin's thumb) that juts out into Lake Michigan. It has lovely small towns, state parks, galleries etc. It's very lively in the summer time, but has fall attractions as well.

The Dells have been a tourist site in Wisconsin since the 1800's. Today it's knows for water parks (indoors and outdoors), but originally it was known for the rock formations on the river. Then in the fifties every tourist attraction you can think of seemed to have found a home in the Dells. Close by is Baraboo which has the Circus Museum and the International Crane Foundation.

Madison might be a nice ending to your trip. We have excellent restaurants, the Arboretum is good to explore as well as State Street, the University of WI and the Capitol. The Capitol tour is quite good. O'Hare is a little under three hours away. (Warning! if your plans coincide with a UWI home football game it can be hard to get a room. )

Another alternative might be to continue north from Green Bay and drive around Lake Michigan. I have not done this, but I know it is popular.

If you enjoy walking and lakes, you might want to drive further north in Wisconsin and explore Nicolet National Forest before heading south again. Depending on when you and how the weather goes this summer, you might be a the right time to see the fall leaves. BTW an interesting stop on the way north out of Green Bay is Peshtigo. You've no doubt heard of the Chicago Fire, but there was another bigger and more devastating fire at the same time in Northern Wisconsin and you can learn all about it at the Peshtigo Fire Museum.

Packer tickets are always available on the secondary market, but sometimes at a premium price. It is good you will have a car because public transportation in Wisconsin is lacking.

Where you go besides Packer sites depends on your interests. Wisconsin has beautiful natural scenery, and hiking and biking opportunities. If you enjoy dining, nightlife and shopping Milwaukee and/or Madison will be more enjoyable.

Knowing your budget would also be helpful in making recommendations. Wisconsin Dells does have some pretty scenery, but it is also known as a tourist trap, great for kids, and some things for adults like a casino, but all in all maybe not worth your time.

I was trying to find the Packer's schedule for next fall, but I was unsuccessful. It is possible to get tickets, but they'll be pricey. In theory, they're always sell-outs. Even if you don't get into Lambeau for a game, you will enjoy the tour, it's very interesting. And if you are in Green Bay without tickets, it's still something to see the atmosphere around the stadium--I've been to several and it's really quite an experience (but I enjoy the close-up views of the TV at home too).

The Dells is a popular destination, but I say there are two sides, the water park, hordes of tourist part and the natural beauty of the river and cliffs. I'm not as much of a fan of the Dells as others, but it's worth seeing if you're not cutting yourself short somewhere else. I'd take Door County over it and Milwaukee, Green Bay and Madison are interesting. Madison has the beautiful state capitol and lots of lakes. Can't help you much with Lake Geneva, sorry. That time if year is just wonderful to be in Wisconsin so I think you'll really enjoy it. Madison has our large university with an extremely good, very popular football program, so if you're in Madison on Game Day you may or may not want to check out the scene around the stadium. It's really something,--wow, sounds like my description of Lambeau!

Sorry guys, not been able to get on here recently to respond, but just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions. I'd never even heard of Door County before but it looks lovely and definately somewhere we will consider trying to fit into our trip.

A couple of nights there, one in Green Bay and one in Madison might work well I think, possibly a one-nighter in Milwaukee too on the way up depending on how long we eventually work out we can stay for - will be waiting for the Packers schedule to be announced before deciding on anything for sure! We like a mix of scenery/outdoorsy stuff and city-type dining, shopping etc so will hopefully be able to get a mix of the two during our time there.

Out of loyalty to Wisconsin, the husband is also quite a fan of the Badgers, but I think I may have my fill of football on this trip so will probably try and avoid Madison on game day (that would be a Saturday normally, right?)!

To pryzk who asked about budget, for hotels we will be trying to stick to something like $120-$150 a night on average for the entire trip which looks do-able based on some initial searching I've done online, but could possibly stretch it a bit if needed - in Toronto my brother can get us a short stay in one of the apartments in his building for only $80 a night which gives us a bit more to play with elsewhere. Green Bay on a Sunday I'm guessing is going to be pricey but it looks like we could get somewhere in Madison for less if we stop there on say a Monday night which will hopefully even things out. Door County I'm guessing would be more expensive if we went there at the weekend but the prices still don't seem too way out compared to our budget.

Anyway, thanks again for all the suggestions - hopefully if this trip goes ahead I'm sure I'll be back on the various Wisconsin forums picking all your brains for the finer details nearer the time :)

If you are in the mood to anticipate your trip, or rather you husband is, there is very big American Football Game tomorrow. Green Bay Packers are playing my Chicago Bears for the NFC championship. The winner goes on to the Super Bowl. ; )

Back on the 14th when I first replied. I was going to write "keep abreast of their games, if they keep winning, tickets may be even harder to get" but I didn't want to jinx it. Let's hope I didn't now. BUT I'll be wearing my lucky Packer sweatshirt tomorrow, so that should cancel it all out. Go PACK!

Yes, generally the Badgers play on Saturday, the Packers on a Sunday. You've got a nice preliminary plan. I'm not sure if you're familiar with our roads, you'll have interstate for most of the trip. Even the state highways are fine so your drive times won't be bad. When we've traveled around the country and hit more mountainous areas, I forgot how long it can take to get around.

One caveat. If you rent a hotel near Green Bay or Door County, make sure it's near where you want to be! Once, when we were heading to Door County, the hotel chain told me that the hotel was only about 30 miles from Door County. He didn't know that it was across the waters of the Green Bay so that actually it was several hours away. We got a pretty good laugh at that.
