Where to go for summer vacation

Hello,

My husband and I live in Chicago and we want to take a vacation in Wisconsin for about 5 days in late July. We've been to Lake Geneva several times and love it, but we'd like to venture out a bit more into the state. We want a scenic and relaxing environment with lots of outdoor activities. One particular thing I'm trying to find is a place for some challenging hiking. Also, we're torn between staying at a resort or in more of a cabin setting. Any suggestions would be most appreciated! Thanks!

jggeb-would you please define "challenging hiking?" How long a hike, and how technical? Thanks

RickMP, we would like to do anywhere from a half day to a full day (like 5 miles?)--something that's not on a paved or highly -traveled trail, with some elevation if possible, or maybe has a destination like a lake. We've done most of our hiking out west, and I know we won't quite find the strenuous hiking that you find in the mountains, but I'm curious what Wisconsin has to offer. Thanks!

If you're looking for one place for all 5 days, I'd recommend Door County. There are 5 state parks with trails that meet your distance goals. Some have elevation changes, especially the Eagle (2mi) and Skyline (3mi) trails in Peninsula State Park. These trails connect via other trails. You can also try the Europe Bay/Hotz Loop, with a side trip to Lynd Point, in Newport State Park. this takes you to Europe Lake. You can hike up Mount Baldy, a high sand dune, and then to Clark Lake in Whitefish Dunes. If you don't choose Door County, Devil's Lake State Park has terrific trails for a day or two visit. Door County is also a great place to kayak and bicycle. Rent bikes ar Nor-Door in Fish Creek.

How about the Porcupine Mountains State Wilderness Area and Lake of the Clouds in the Upper Peninsula? A bit more difficult to get there but seems as though it might fit what your looking for. Interesting hiking at various elevations with views over Lake

Superior. Very cool place.
