Great Lake Spot in Wisconsin or Michigan

Would anyone be able to help me narrow my search? I'm looking for a great Lake vacation spot for me and some friends. We're young couples and were looking to rent a home and boat, but also have some good restaurants, hiking or maybe wineries in the area.

Here's the tricky part, it'll probably be around the 4th of July, which makes everything crazy busy.

Thanks your your suggestions!

Door County is the first to enter my mind....but yes with it being the 4th you'd have to book now or before. You could find a great area there and there are many good dining possibilities

Door County offers: fantastic scenery on the Lake/bay side, no chain motels/resorts throughout, great dining, wineries and more.

Another good location is Bayfield, WI.

http://bayfield.org/ That's on Lake Superior and is a wonderful spot with the Apostle Islands there, Madeline Island, the Big Top for shows

great dining Landmark Restaurant at The Rittenhouse Inn and the berry capital and home of the annual AppleFest.

Three Lakes (home of Three Lakes Winery) was voted single best town in America I believe in 2010. It's a beautiful area, also Eagle RIver is another you might consider.

There are many more possibilities closer in SE WI. A popular destination is Lake Geneva which you may find a good fit as well.

Door County is a good choice and one of my favorites. You might also look at SW Michigan, fom Michiana to South Haven (or further north. If you choose the Michigan option, be aware that the I-80 traffic through Indiana on the weekends is brutal.

I read this that you were looking for a spot on a lake that was great, not necessarily that you were looking for a spot on a Great Lake--Michigan or Superior. ; ) If you're looking for the former, I would look in the Wisconsin North Woods. The Minocqua area has a lot going on--no wineries though. The lakes are gorgeous. It's a further drive than Door County, but I love the area. I wish I had visited more while I was in WI. I kept thinking that there would be time. ; (

that's why I threw in Lake Geneva and Three Lakes....it's just that Door County and Bayfield are the best of the best in so many ways I couldn't leave them out.

i'd say go to SW michigan.... any of the beach towns would fit your bill.....however, you're lodging bills will go thru the roof;-)

if you could get something near union pier, you'll be close to warren dunes st park....and some great hiking opportunities....

To narrow it down: Are you looking for something on an inland lake or a Great Lake? Are you looking for a week, more than a week, or less than a week?

Try the Hayward Lakes Region in northwestern Wisconsin. Treeland Resorts on the Chippewa Flowage is nice but somewhat fishing oriented. We like Angler's Haven on Lac Courte Orreilles just outside of Hayward which has everything you're looking for. But I can't imagine you'll get a cabin at this point in time. There are dozens of lakes in the region. Check it out.

I'm looking for a spot on any lake, preferably one I can rent a boat on and have a little room to explore, but it certainly doesn't have to be Lake Michigan or or Erie. Probably 4-5 days.

Thanks for all the input! Although Bayfield looks like it would be ideal, its almost a ten hour drive which is too long for some in the group. I'll certainly have to go there someday, though. I'm thinking Door County or possibly Warren Dunes.

Someone mentioned something to me about Castle Rock Lake, is this anything to look into?

You won't be able to rent a house in Door County for less than a week. A 5 day speedboat or pontoon boat rental in Door County will probably cost close to $1,000 before gas. Expect to pay at least $150 a night per waterfront hotel room. A waterfront 3 BR home will probably start around $1,500 per week. Week rentals start Saturday night.
