Sept anniversary getaway close to WI

I am looking for a weekend getaway for our 10 year annivesary on Sept 21-23. We are willing to drive some ways but would like to keep it to 4 hours or less. (Currently located in the Appleton/Green Bay area). Would like it to be romantic, yet we also would like to have things to entertain us. We enjoy visiting the cities (Chicago, Twin Cities, etc) but we also love going to the Northwoods in Michigans UP. We love fishing to comedy shows.....Yet we are open to new adventures. Any suggstions? It will be a much needed weekend away from our very busy 11, 8 , & 6 year old boys. So no waterparks suggestions or places we would rather go as a family too. Thanks in advance for your reply!

also pricey but the American Club Resort in Kohler

Bayfield and Madeline Island are great destinations as well. Many may overlook it for the Door but it's a fantastic region. http://bayfield.org/

Always Door County www.doorcounty.com

You couldn't go wrong with Canoe Bay for a special treat.

Consider Three Lakes voted best small town in america: http://www.threelakes.com/

Very quiet and full of charm and swiss culture is New Glarus www.swisstown.com. The dining is wonderful, New Glarus Brewing is a great stop and the Sugar River Trail in town is great as well.

Check out Hayward, WI. It has a variety of accomodations from motels, hotels, b&b's, cabins, campgrounds, etc. Something to fit your needs. Plus, there are plenty of things to do from shopping, water activities, lumberjack shows, casino, museums, etc. http://www.haywardlakes.com/

I think you'd really enjoy this part of WI.

If your into fall festivals/arts n' crafts type stuff~ the 1st weekend in October there is Cranberry Fest in the small, quaint town of Stone Lake (near Hayward) Lots of people, but definatley an interesting day. Even if you don't get there that weekend, Stone Lake is a neat little town to visit when in the area. http://www.stonelakecranberryfestival.com/

Canoe Bay is awesome but very expensive. i would recomment it if your budget permits. Otherwise, consider the chanticleer Guest House in Sturgeon Bay which is very romantic and ideally located for access to Door County.

My husband and I discovered the cute little town of Stockholm last year. It's along the great river road and has a bit of an artsy vibe.
