Suggestions for weekend trips from Chicago

Hi all,

Having exhausted all vacation time, I am looking for day trips or overnighters from Chicago to places in WI (other than the Dells).

I want to get away from cities/commercial places. Hiking/biking options will be best. We have 3 kids - 9y, 7y and 3y.

Appreciate any suggestions,

Naperville mom

Check out some of the state parks. We used to always head all the way north to Rhinelander and Nicolet, but there are some very nice state parks in the southern and central parts. Governor Dodge and Blue Mounds come to mind. One of the more memorable canoe trips we did was of the Pecatonica River. Our labrador came with us and refused to sit in the canoe. Instead, poor Happy, braced all four legs on the side of the canoe and barked all the way down the river. She was out like a light when we got back in the car and couldn't be tempted awake even by a hamburger.

Thanks, all! Just what I was looking for.. multiple quick, easy options.

Camp Wandawega sounds like fun.. and not too far from Chicago. Will check them.. their website is fancy, but doesn't clearly say what they offer. The treehouses/tents, etc are not even listed. Need to call and find out.

The mounds and lighthouse ideas are doable too...

Will save the Door county for a longer vacation..

Thanks!
