Big Horn Mountains question

We are interested in a trip that would includes the Black Hills attractions and the Big Horn Mountains. It looks like The Big Horn Mountains cover many areas.

What would be the closest city in Wyoming from Rapid City that can be used as a starting point to see the Big Horn Mountains and what itinerary for 1 to 1.5 full days would you recommend. We'd want scenic drives and maybe easy to moderate hiking.

Buffalo lies at the east side of the Big Horns and would be closest to Rapid City. The alternative would be Sheridan, if that's more convenient. Both towns provide good access to the mountains. If you choose to stay in Buffalo, check out the Occidental Hotel.

The Big Horns encompass an area larger than Rhode Island, so it's hard to suggest an itinerary. But here's a good place to start laying out a plan:
