Trip planned, thoughts please

Ok, all booked so here we go...

Fly into Denver.

Day 1 - Drive Denver to Teton Village. I know it's a long drive but it's doable in a day.

Day 2 and 3 - Stay Teton Village, visit GTNP. What to do in GTNP?

Day 4 - Head to West Yellowstone spending the day in Yellowstone along the way.

Day 5, 6 and 7. Visit Yellowstone, spending 2 nights W Yellowstone and 1 in Gardiner. Finish day 7 by heading out to Cody.

Day 8 head over to Cody then Badlands for a couple of days before heading back to Denver. So that's 2 full days in GTNP and essentially 5 full days in YNP (1 coming from South, 2 based in West, 1 headed West to North and 1 headed North to East)

Any thoughts folks? Must see in any particular areas?

Thanks in advance

Neil

Day 1- Hope you are getting an early flight to Denver because your drive to Teton Village will be at least 10 hours without stopping and you do not want to drive in the dark in this part of the country. Also all car rentals at Denver airport or by shuttle service and off site- it usually takes an hour or so to pick up the car, etc.

Day 2 and 3- boat ride on Jenny Lake, float trip on Snake River, hiking, siteseeing Morman Row, etc.

Days in Badlands- are you also planning to see Mt. Rushmore, etc. while in the area? What about Custer SP?

Here is a website for the must sees in YNP- this will help you plan your days in the park-

Enjoy your trip!!!

Yeah we fly into Denver the night before and pick up the car then, so we can get an early start the following morning and have the full day to drive it.

Badlands time, we have 2 days staying in Rapid City, would like to see Mt Rushmore, Deadwood and anything else folks recommend.

Thanks for your response.

Depending on what time you will arrive in Denver, you might consider driving a ways that night to stay over at a different town. That time spent there would reduce the driving time the next day which would make it more pleasant.

Don't get into Denver until 6pm or so then have to pick up car. Staying in hotel on north side of city near I25 to make early getaway the following morning.

Drove Moab to Las Vegas in one go last year which is similar (slightly shorter) distance.

Just as a slight side thought, is there anyparticular route anyone would suggest for Denver to GTNP? Slight detours that are worthwhile?

Denver to GTNP... very worthwhile side trip is WY-130 from Laramie over the very scenic Snowy Range Scenic Byway. The views of the mountain cliffs and lakes are phenomenal. Adds only a few miles but is slower than freeway so adds about a half an hour of drive time (plus stops for photos). But this is a not to be missed drive.

On way north from Rawlins to Lander a short side trip to Independence Rock is worth it too. Pick up makings for picnic lunch in Rawlins as there are picnic tables and facilities there. If up to hiking a bit climb/walk to the top of the rock to view carvings made by wagon train pioneers. Walking down is worse than going up so a zig-zag technique works best.

If going via Lander is too much then US-191 from Rock Springs and up through Pinedale is a bit faster.

Just a thought - why not fly into Jackson, WY and miss the 10-hour drive? Unless you just want to see the country, it seems like it would be easier to fly into Jackson.

Thought about that too. Flights to Denver are cheaper, car hire in Denver is cheaper. Also since we are heading over to Mt Rushmore area, it's as easy to drive back to Denver as it is to drive back to Jackson.
