Lander WY to Estes Park CO in one day. Which route?

Should we go via Medicine Bow and eat lunch at the Virginian Hotel or go south and drive the Snowy Range Scenic Byway?

We will be coming into Estes Park from the east via Laramie. We won't take the Trail Ridge Road into Estes Park because I have a fear of high drop offs with no guard rails :-(

Is it scary on the Snowy Range drive also?

Please advise. We leave the 3rd of September!

If scenery is your top priority, drive the Snowy Range Scenic Byway.

Nope.

agree with Bill- Snowy Range is awesome. And I don't like heights and no guard rails either!

Snowy Range Scenic Byway is very tame. Long steady inclines and then on top where it does loop around a bit it is all wide open with no big drop offs. All the cliffs are above you. If the weather is clear the drive is well worth it. On the Laramie side it is a bit drier as you drop down through Centenial and on the west side towards Saratoga is some deep forest along the sides until you gradually climb past the treeline. Doing Snowy Range in morning usually avoids thunderstorms that build in the peaks in afternoon.

From Lander there is a nice rest area at junction with WY-135 with some historical info and a bit farther on at junction with WY-220 you have option for short side trip to Independence Rock Historical site. The stretch from there to Rawlins pass through the Great Divide Basin which is cut off from the rest of North American drainage so does not drain to any ocean - what little precip there is.
