Road Closures for Fire

08/20/13 @ 1700: The Grand Loop road between Fishing Bridge and Elk Antler Creek has been closed for the Alum Fire. Travel between Canyon and Lake is no longer possible, and traffic must detour through Old Faithful. Also closed is US 212 between Red Lodge and the MT/WY state line. The new Rock Creek Fire is 200 acres, and is located 5 miles south of Red Lodge. Guests may detour via WY 296 from Cooke City towards Cody and north to Belfry, MT, then to Red Lodge. This fire was likely human caused (although officially undetermined at this time), please be careful out there. The Emigrant Fire is also blowing up at the moment. Aside from the small 7 1/2 section of road north of Fishing Bridge, all park services and roads remain open to visitor travel. These closures may last a few days.

Thanks for posting thbergs. The chatter on the FB pages from the various guides this week sounded like they expected it any minute. Hope it is not shut for long.

Thbergs, hope it is OK, but I will post the link to the Montana Dept of Transportation so people can check there for updates on the 212 closure South of Red Lodge if they are headed out in the next couple of days.

Good updates here too:

Hoping Denalicat's home is not in the fire zone.

We just arrived in Cody last night, had planned to drive the Beartooth Hwy tomorrow on our way to lodgings at Roosevelt. Have been planning this trip for at least 18 months. So very disappointed Beartooth is closed as of last night, and also Hayden Valley access it seems. Trying to just think of this as a great excuse to return next year!

Sherry, sorry your plans are rerouted. I realize this could change again at any time! Stay safe, enjoy the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. You have the right attitude- everything goes on the next trip list!

So sorry as well Sherry. I know you have spent a lot of time planning. Looks like Chief Joseph is open so you can still take that beautiful drive.

IMO only..........It's really too bad that they are not allowing people from the Wyoming side to drive up to at least Rock Creek Vista and then back. The fire is no where close to there and traffic in that part of the pass would not hinder the fire fighting efforts. There just needs to be a sign making it clear that traffic can not continue northbound after the rest area. Totally understandable to have all southbound traffic out of Red Lodge over the pass blocked.

Wild fires move fast and the circumstances change quickly. Keep checking as the road can reopen as the fire status warrants.

I wondered about that Deb! It looks like on the MT DOT site they are stopping traffic at Chief Joseph, but what would be the problem with allowing people to travel up and back to at least the sign for the Bear''s tooth?

I was hoping by the time Sherry or anyone else got up to the end of Chief Joseph there would be changes (for the good) in the closures.

Thanks for the concern, Pam. The Mr's bike tour may have to re-route for their last day's ride on the Beartooth. Tomorrow they ride Chief Joseph to Cody.

But life is full of re-routes, eh?!

Seems like this time of year there are always fires, so have to work around them.

I feel deeply for the young wildlife, though.

We can all hope for rain but no lighting strikes that would cause more fires. We will be more than glad to send you some of ours. We have had more than our yearly average of rainfall and it is only the middle of August.
