Welcome to the forums JJJ-roadtrip-

Usually most U.S. Schools will take a 2 week Christmas Break each year that starts usually around the week of Christmas or close to that and goes till the full week after Christmas, making it very busy at Disneyland. So that would put Schools going back in session around Jan 5th for 2015. So Jan 4th would be busy. Theres also something called "Three Kings Day" where some Schools will also take off, so Jan 5th and 6th would likely be about as busy as the days before that, so busy.

Its a small world attraction usually closes right after Christmastime is over to get its Christmastime overlay removed. That time is usually when Schools go back in session, so likely closed after Jan 4th for a few weeks or so.

Other than that usual closure, you are too early to see any dates really for refurbishments in Jan of 2015 yet. But that is a more popular months in Jan and Feb for refurbishments.

Weather is also unpredictable in that month, and you can have rain since its the rainy season.

For Jan you would want to avoid visiting on some dates as they would be very busy, besides the ones already mentioned such as..... NAMM which is very large Convention near Disneyland Jan 22-25 for 2015, and Jan 16-19 which is a Holiday weekend for Schools for 2015.

As far as places to say goes... We will be happy to help you find something, but... you will need to be more specific with a budget per night so we can help you find something. As we cant know what you may think of an being "affordable" or "decent". Although we would never suggest anywhere to stay that was not clean and well kept.

And it will depend on what time you decide to visit as prices will vary widely with the different seasons and events.

Heres a Map of Hotels in the Disneyland area so you can see where things are located. The Disneyland Main entrance is off of Harbor Blvd near where it says "East Shuttle Area" on the Map. Most of those closest to the entrance are going to be standard Motels, with a few Hotels in a little farther walking distance

Dates after Jan 6th or so should have lower prices for about a week till the busier events show up. Keep in mind though that because of the three kings day, hours during Jan 6th would likely still have somewhat extended hours and nightly Fireworks. Usually though hours are shortened during weekdays in Jan something like 10am till 8pm with longer hours on weekends, Fri,Sat,Sun. Fireworks and Fantasmic shows are usually only on weekends, Fri,Sat, Sun.

Heres the Calendar from this Jan to give you some idea of hours and entertainment showing then ect. Keep in mind that dates would be slightly different for next years info as for this year alot of Schools were back in session by Jan 6th.

That budget should get you pretty much anywhere you wanted to stay besides the Disney owned Hotels in the area.

For standard Motels that are the closest to the entrance, Best Western Park Place Inn, ( 5min walk to the Turnstiles that go into either Park ) Best Western Anaheim Inn, ( 7min walk) Anaheim Desert Inn ( 7min walk), Camelot Inn... ( 7 min walk) Candy Cane Inn ( 10 min walk, have thier own free shuttle)

Hotels in the closet walking distance include the Fairfield Inn, Howard Johnsons. Within about a 15 min walk, nicer Hotels....Hotel Indigo, Desert Palms, Sheraton Park Hotel, Red Lion, and Residence Inn Maingate which has full free breakfast and some weeknight light meals, and full kitchens.

Most of these Hotels besides the Fairfield (since its about an 8 min walk) would offer Art Shuttle service which goes from Disneyland to alot of area Hotels about every 30 min daily for a small fee per person.

As far as Theme Park tickets go... you should be aware that Australian residents can purchase a special 10 day Disneyland Pass for about the same cost as a regular 5 day Parkhopper ticket. They are only available through a travel agent in that area.

The Mousesavers.com website is also a good resource for you as they will list current discounts on attractions for you ( they dont sell tickets) And you can compare Multi-attraction tickets to individual ones there to see what may work best for you.

Keep in mind that SeaWorld is about a 90 min drive in good traffic from Anaheim. There is also a train that runs from Anaheim to San Diego. San Diego though is a fun City to visit, and you could easily take 3 or 4 days there visting.

Thank you, didn't know about the 10 day pass. I will look into that. We plan on spending about 3 nights in San Diego, definitely a place to visit we think.

FYI, LAUSD, one of the largest school districts in the area Christmas break is from December 20th, 2014 through January 11th, 2015. Some districts will go back earlier, but a good percentage have been not going back into session until Three Kings Day to prevent unexcused absences.

Nevada also has one of the largest School districts, but is showing classes back in session by Jan 5th.

So, for the time after that, numbers will obviously be more than usual with some California Schools still being out for a break, But, numbers would be alot less than if there were alot of other states taking off the same time, alot of which area not.
