Is Anaheim a good base for LA sights?

Hi, thinking of going to LA for a week in November and will probably be hiring a car, do you think Anaheim is a good place for a base to see the sights of LA?

Have looked and the hotels seem cheaper than other parts of LA. We wont be doing the parks, like Disneyland but will be doing the beaches, like Santa Monica, Hollywood, etc.

Also Anaheim seems to have restaurants and shops so we can eat local to the hotel at night after a sightseeing packed day.

All comments and thoughts welcome.

OK, it sounds like you are using the term "LA" to mean the "Greater Los Angeles Area" aka the Southland, other times the term LA can mean Los Angeles County or the city of Los Angeles.

Using the "tourist" term, yes, many folks pick Anaheim as a central location to see the Anaheim/Buena Park Area, the rest of Orange County, LA County and even San Diego County. It is a good central location for Southern California. Some folks like to change hotels, some prefer to stay ii one place and do day trips, especially if they opt for an Extended Stay type of Hotel and not bother with checking in/out. And as mentioned, the pricing and variety of the Hotels are very good in the area due to the large Convention Center, the theme parks, etc.

I would first come up with a day by day Itinerary, will you attend a sporting event at Angel Stadium or the Honda Center, a dinner Theater such as Medieval Times, Pirates' Dinner Adventure or the new Mariachi Theater, will you visit a beach like Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, etc.? A day in San Diego, maybe a drive down the Coastal Highway, Mission San Juan Capistrano, the Cleveland National Forest. Are you interested in gambling and casinos? you can find them in Northern Inland San Diego County and Riverside County. A day trip to Palm Springs?

And yes, since Anaheim is the top tourist area in the state of California, there are plenty of shops and Restaurants nearby.

But make a day by day plan, and then use something like Google Maps to see the locations you plan to visit, you might want to split up the stay based on the map.

I now live in Anaheim, and constantly go to the city of LA (and LA County) to both work and play, and as someone who also needs to go to San Diego on a regular basis, one of the reasons I picked my new house was the location.

Anaheim is not even in LA County and it's a good 30-60 minutes from Hollywood depending on traffic.

If you are not planning any time at Disneyland, then you've not reason to base in Anaheim.

I suggest you repost on the LA forum so LA experts can assist you.

No. Anaheim is not a good base for Los Angeles sights as you describe them.

It doesn't sound at all like he's thinking of the "greater LA area", at least not in the sense that is meant in reply #1. When he's specifically mentioning places like Santa Monica and Hollywood, its quite a leap to think he means San Diego, Palm Springs, or Huntington Beach, or to basically just draw an arbitrarily large circle on a map, arbitrarily centered on Anaheim and then declare that Anaheim is in the center of everything.

To answer the OP's question, no, Anaheim is a terrible base for visiting places like Hollywood and Santa Monica. You'll be looking at drives each way of around 60 minutes most times of the day, and if you won't have a car, by public transit it takes a lot longer than that. It would be similar to using Nottingham as a base for visiting somewhere like Sheffield. As for hotel prices, look in Hollywood, you'll find places as cheap or cheaper than what you find in Anaheim. You'd have a far better time and spend less time in transit if you spend nights in Anaheim for Disneyland or Knott's Berry Farm, and then move hotels to somewhere more central to the other places that you want to visit.

Anaheim is a poor base for L.A. Here's a map that shows the major districts in the city of L.A. (and nearby areas). Note that Anaheim is 'off the map' at the lower right corner of the map:

Anaheim hotels might be a little less expensive than those in Los Angeles but that's because Anaheim is not a convenient place to stay when visiting Los Angeles. How much is your time worth? You'll be spending 2 hours return driving between L.A. and Anaheim, sitting in traffic during our morning and afternoon 'rush hours' via Interstate (motorway) 5 -- an uninteresting drive, at best.

L.A. has world-class dining, bars, lounges, live music venues, dance clubs in concentrated nightlife areas, e.g. the Sunset Strip. Hollywood, downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica. Anaheim nightlife pales in comparison (unless you're a couple with young kids -- in that case, there is plenty of 'family dining' and nightlife).

Trust me, you don't want to stay in Anaheim if you're concentrating your holiday in Los Angeles.

There are plenty of less expensive options in the LA area as well from what I understand. Its a 1 hour drive from Anaheim to LA area in good traffic. You will be doing enough driving already if you stay in LA even.

If you will post in the LA forum, they will be happy to help you find somewhere good to stay based on your budget. There should be some options there.
