First time visitor to AMI with kids, couple of q's

Hello all,

We are first time visitors, two adults, newborn and a toddler.

Previously we stayed on Sanibel and visited Captiva for beach sometimes.

There is a ton of rentals on this little island, and we were wondering what location would work best? North? South? Does it really matter?

Looking for beach access with calm waters, not sure if any of the beaches are shaded at all (Captiva had some limited tree shade)

Also, how hot does it really towards end of September?

Just wondering if our two month old will be able to handle all the heat or will we be stuck inside a house all day... :)

You can find shade at some of the beaches, Bean Pointe and Coquina Beach both have some shaded areas. I would say that in the heat of the day you might want to be at your pool at the place you are staying. You could always rent umbrellas or little tents, that will help. It will be hot and humid for sure.

I would look at La Costa Condominiuns, they are right on the beach and have a great shaded pool area so you can walk out on the beach and when you have had enough you can take a swim and relax on the patio and still watch the beach area.

Hit the beach early, kids will be up anyway :-). Then again around sunset, great time to play in the sand and surf. Watch the sun reflecting off the sand with young ones, even under an umbrella, and sensitive eyes.(burned mine more than once growing up). Some cottages an homes in BB and HB sit under large Australian pines, but not many.

Thank you all.

What would be a realistic budget for renting a one bedroom condo or small cabin in late September?

I am getting quotes in the ballpark of 1300-1600 with all fees and taxes.

Is that average for this time of year?

Since that is a slower time of year and the island has more availability sometimes you can actually ask for and negotiate a better rate. Never hurts to ask right? Last summer we asked for a reduced rate and were able to negotiate down by $300. I would definitely get a place that has a pool close so you can relax close to "home" which is nice when traveling with little ones.

To answer your question about location: Bradenton Beach (south end) is the busiest area then Holmes Beach (middle of the island) and the quietest is the north end at Anna Maria. There are public beach accesses at the end of almost every street on the west coast of the island. Overall, you will find that the island's beaches to be less crowded than many of Florida beaches. You will get to experience that "Old Florida" charm that many of us enjoy. Happy trails to you and your family.
