Border crossings Belize<->Guatemala w/rental car.

We are planning a one or two night visit to Tikal during our trip to Belize. We'll be driving from San Ignacio and crossing the border in Melchor. We're planning on renting a car from one of the rental agencies which allow border crossings.

How difficult/easy are the border crossings? Is it a big deal? Anything we should come prepared for ahead of time? Where is the best place to exchange money? How much does the crossing cost?

If you have any experiences I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks!

I don't have any experience, but I've read that you won't have any insurance once you cross the border into Guatamala.

Please make sure that your rental company allows you to cross the border- without the proper paperwork- it wont happen. We did not know this until the day before we were going to Tikal: the rental company faxed over everything to us after we pleaded with them for hours. Crossing take some time, standing in one line and then another. It helps if you understand Spanish.

Right around the border there are $ exchange huts as well as pple walking around offereing to exchange $ for ya (not much of a bargan but we exchanged $50,00 just so we could have some $ in our pocket) Shops across the border in Guatemala are expensive- wait until you are out in the country to buy trinkets.

Tikal is wonderful, breathtaking and exciting. Moring sunrise is a must as well as hire a guide for a day tour.

We were happy when we returned to Belize (less guns and military presents)
