payment forms in super markets and gas stations

We will be leaving in about a month for Belize. We will be driving for the part of our trip on the mainland. I would like to use credit cards as much as possible and bring very little cash. Can anyone advise if gas stations and grocery stores accept credit cards? We will travel the western hwy to SI and back to BC. Can anyone advise about how easy it is to use ATMs to get cash on credit cards on mainland and Ambergris? We just don't want to have the worry of guarding a lot of cash constantly.

As far as I know, there are no "self service" gas stations in Belize, therefore you'd have to take care of the payment inside with your card. ...but they are generally accepted at fuel stations in the main towns and cities.

Most larger, established supermarkets, restaurants, bars etc, accept credit cards, however, still keep a small amount of cash handy for those incidental purchases. In any case, most if not all the banks, on the mainland & in Ambergris, do have ATM services that allow you to obtain cash in a hurry.

On your drive to the western part of the country, Belize City, Belmopan the capital & San Ignacio all have branches of the Banks in Belize; i.e. Atlantic Bank, First Caribbean, Alliance Bank, Scotia Bank, The Belize Bank.

Hope this helps
