10 days/Itinerary Help - Ambergris, Caulker, Zoo and ?????

Please help with suggestions for a husband and wife in mid-50s.

Day 1 - Land at airport at 3:30 pm. No hotel yet - could we get to Caulker for the evening (do the ferries run from Belize City after 5pm to Caulker?)

Days 2, 3 and 4: Reservations on Ambergris/Tranquility Bay Resort.

Day 5: Nothing planned yet.

Day 6: Reservations at Zoo Lodge/Nocturnal tour.

Days 7, 8 and 9: Nothing planned yet.

Day 10: Leave Belize City Airport at 4pm.

Please help fill-in our itinerary! Our interests on the mainland include birdwatching, mayan ruins and zip lining. We can rent a car on the mainland if recommended. Thank you for suggestions - we hope to return the favor someday.

If you fly, you can get to Ambergris on Day 1. I don't know if you could make the 4:30 water taxi. You could try, if you miss it, take the 5:30 water taxi to Caulker.

After the zoo I'd head to San Ignacio. You can arrange a transfer or catch the bus. From there, you'll have easy access to ruins and such.

I would just take the plane direct from the international airport to Caye Caulker and save the $25US taxi fare + water taxi fares, and you will get there sooner, with less stress.

Since you will be so close to Lamanai from the zoo, do the Mayan ruins/zip-line and maybe even the cave tubing! Dark and mysterious yet beautiful. You may even meet Lucky the cave dog! Might even do them all in one day as it is a 3 hour commute one way to Lamanai from Ambergris: 1 hour boat ride from Ambergris to the outskirts of Belize City to a river stop where you will switch to a bus, then a 1 hour bus ride to another 1 hour boat ride before you finally arrive at the ruins etc. But it's all worth it as you will be quite entertained by the excursion staff and there is much to see along the way. Just remember that you have a 3 hour return by the same route. But it's all good and the staff provides breakfast, lunch, drinks and snacks along the way! We booked through SEArious Adventures but I'm sure they all provide the same excellent quality of service. Enjoy your trip!

Caulker is more laid back and less touristy than San Pedro, if you can call S.P. touristy. Love that there are no fast food restaurants or high dollar name brand coffee shops anywhere! If you dive, do the barrier reef and Blue Hole even though the latter is a 2hr boat ride. If it's your first time out, snorkel, get to know the locals and enjoy the food. Caulker is about a 30+ minute boat ride to or from Ambergris. Ambergris is only an 18 min. plane ride from Belize City. We stayed 3 miles south of San Pedro and loved it. Peaceful yet still only a 15min. golf cart drive to the city. Lots of great restaurants in Ambergris and most are quite affordable. We ate fresh catch of the day and lobster with only an occasional chicken strip as an appetizer.Try the conch ceviche! All the food is fresh and wonderful! We took a boat tour down the New River on our way to Lamanai and saw an amazing array of wildlife including, iguana, blue heron, crocodile, dolphin and too many birds to remember their names, but all exotic and beautiful! Might also try your hand at fly fishing! It's catch and release.

Since this was our first trip to Belize, we chose to stay at Ambergris Caye only because we wanted a more "island" experience and knew that the mainland was easily accessible at any time. I'd recommend you stay away from the city if you already live in a big city (we live just outside of Houston) and want to experience a more laid back island vacation. Truly beautiful and the people are un"belize"able ! Most friendly and accommodating.

Be prepared not to want to leave and also feel a sense of melancholy when you return. It's beautiful friendly environment will effect you and make you want to live there!
