Belize City

We get into Belize City at 4:45 PM and have a rental car. We are not familar with the area at all and would like to just get out of the city heading in a northern direction. Can anyone suggest a hotel? We would like to be somewhere by dark.

The airport is in Ladyville on the Northern Highway, 14 miles northwest of Belize City. It could be 5:30 pm by the time you clear customs and get squared away with the rental car. Sundown this time of the year is around 5:45 pm and it will be dark by a little after 6:00 pm.

I'll let others make recommendations for that area.

We have a car for the first week and would like to take in the ruins etc in the north first and then drive down south ending up in Placentia for a couple of days then over the Ambergres Cay for the last week. Any recommendations are appreciated. The first night our goal is just to get to decent accommodations as soon after we leave the airport as possible.

The closest clean, cheap hotel to the airport is Global Village, a Chinese motel near the turn in to the airport. It costs $US55 per night, has rooms with either king bed or 2 queens, cable TV and free Wi-fi. They also have a basic Chinese menu if you just want to collapse for the night. And, there is a big, safe parking lot for the vehicle as well as a fried egg sandwich and cup of coffee or juice(one or the other, not both - it is a Chinese motel afterall) in the morning. Come out of the airport road and take a right on the highway as if you were going to the City. It's on the right very soon after across the street from the big Chinese supermarket.

Thanks, I will check it out. Clean is the biggest thing. Our budget is $100US or less.

If you don't already have a great map, this is the best one if you have time for it to arrive before your trip...

Note that they are out of stock, but look down a bit as they other sellers that have them.

Try to visit the Belize Zoo located on the Western Highway on the way to San Ignacio and if possible spend some time in San Ignacio. Beautiful area and it's the most visited inland area in Belize because of the numerous Mayan sites, rain forest, and nature tourism.

If you have a car, the Mayan city of Xunantunich is very easy to visit. It's only a few miles west of San Ignacio and you cross the river on a ferry and then it's only a mile up the hill to the site. Cahal Pech is a small Mayan site but right town.

Caracol is a much longer drive being about 60 miles mostly on washboard gravel roads. It's a great site and there are several things you can do and see along the way.

Tikal is the greatest of all the Mayan city sites....the tallest and most visited. It's the trip of a lifetime and very easy to visit on a tour out of San Ignacio...

You can check out these sights and a lot more in our photo album...

Oh, and on the drive down to Placentia, be sure to take the Hummingbird Highway. It's a beautiful drive.

Black Orchid Lodge, on the Boom Road, between the Northern and Western Hywys, where you are headed to. About 20 mins from the Intl airport, Nice inn along the river with a pool, nice restaurant and rooms.

Thank you everyone for your advice. We are booking the Black Orchid for the first night simply because it has more amenities than the Global Village and if all goes well we should be there by 7PM. Pretty early just to stay in your room.. We plan to drive to San Ignacio the next day and do some easy ruin sights staying there for two nights at least and heading to Tikal through a tour the second day. We would like to go on to Placencia but also would like to do some cave tubing. Should we do this out of San Ignacio or Placencia? Thanks again for all your help

I'd hit Jaguar Paw on the way to Cayo, or Cave's Branch on the way to Placencia for cave tubing. You'll love it!
