Do you have to hire a "tour guide" for everything in Belize?

Still working on planning our activities in Belize. It seems like everything costs money to do and that you have to hire a tour guide everywhere, is this truly the case?

Nope. There are some things that require a guide, like the ATM cave trip:

There are some things that might be better or easier with a guide, and lots of things that are easily done by yourself. Visiting the ruins of Cahal Pech and Xunantunich are examples there. Lots of examples in your guidebook. ;-)
