First trip to Belize - ambregris caye, punta gorda, hopkins

Hi. Our first trip to Belize will be for our honeymoon in August. We loved Costa Rica and hope to get a similar vibe with great waters (but we don't dive). We are a bit confused on the best parts of Belize to see in 6-7 days on a reasonable budget. We want to do a few excursions - Tikal, Zoo, snorkeling. We were told Ambergris and Caulker Caye would be great. Victoria House seems highly recommended. We see that for excursions we probably need to spend at least one or two nights in San Pedro (Mystic River or Chaa Creek?). Unclear if Hopkins (Hopkins Bay Resort?) or Punta Gorda (Cotton Tree Lodge?) may be a better base. We want something private with are less kids and a nice beach, but still want to be able to walk to restaurants, town or activity on occasion. Which areas or trip plan would be the best of both worlds? Thanks so much in advance!

I haven't been to Punta Gorda (yet), but, I don't think there are beaches. It's also far away from Tikal.

I'd split between San Ignacio and either Ambergris or Hopkins. If you choose Hopkins, you're about 10 miles from the reef. Ambergris is less than a mile.

Ambergris will be busier. More options for food and lodging. Victoria House is gorgeous.

A good area to get both land and sea is Placencia, with daily tours to beautiful island nearby to spend the day snorkeling or just relaxing by the water. From Placencia you can also get a guide to take you to tikal, spend the night in tikal then head back the following day. Here are a few recommendations for both tours or accommodations they can handle either:

You need to look at a map. Ambergris is an island (caye) off the Belizean mainland. You are around and hour and a half away from the mainland by boat, 15 minutes by air. If you are keen to do excursions, you would be better staying on the mainland. tikal is in guatemala and really requires that you are based in San Ignacio if you want to do a day trip. It is fantastic. You could arrive at Belize International, take a flight to Flores, Guatemala, next day visit Tikal, fly back to Belize then out to Ambergris Caye. Victoria House is lovely.

Mystic River and Chaa Creek are on the mainland, San Pedro is the capital of Ambergris Caye. I think you mean San Ignacio. Either would be lovely for a honeymoon, and you could make a day trip to Tikal from either.

How about a few days in Mystic River or Chaa Creek, then a few days at ?victoria House? That would be a very classic honeymoon.

If you want to go way down south to Punta Gorda, then Belcampo Rainforest resort is gorgeous for a honeymoon, but you are much too far for a daytrip to Tikal.

Sounds like you might want to do the Chaa Creek/Victoria House surf and turf split. That way you could do Tikal and maybe ATM while inland, hit the zoo on the way to the beach, and then your snorkeling(Hol Chan is a must) on AC. I'd think PG would be a little far to go on this trip, but you could fly there quickly.

As mentioned above, you could snorkel from Placencia or Hopkins after a little boat ride, but the CC/VH split is common, and everyone has great things to say about it.
