Mosquito netting recommended for San Ignacio? Anti-malarial?

Hi everyone!

I am travelling to Belize from May 21 to June 2nd for my honeymoon. We will spend the first 6 days in Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, and the rest of the time in San Ignacio doing inland excursions. I recently made a travel appointment to get needed vaccinations and have also been advised to take anti-malarial medication. However, I know that risk of malaria can be avoided by wearing long pants at night and using insect repellant. I was wondering if anyone has advice about bringing mosquito netting? We are staying at Midas Resort in San Ignacio and I don't believe they have netting included. Also, do travelers to the Cayo district generally take anti-malarial drugs? I definitely would like to minimize the risk of getting sick but hear that many of these drugs have nasty side-effects.

I would never take anti-malarials, but you'll want to consult with your doctor. I've met only 2 people in 10 years that have gotten it, and they were in the bush when they contracted it. The side effects don't seem to be worth it in some cases. There aren't a lot of mosquitoes here.

There are very limited side effects if you take malerone. If you like to gamble go without taking anti-malarials, maybe you will be lucky... that being said, I would go with the educated advice of your GP or travel medicine specialist.
