Placencia to Belize Zoo to Caye Caulker in a day?

Has anyone done this? It looks possible from the bus timetables, but won't give us long at the zoo (2 or 3 hours max if we get the 6:15am bus from Placencia).

Anyone got any experience of the zoo, would a couple of hours be enough?

Thanks in advance

That would be a long day but it is doable. If it's a cruise ship day the zoo will be hopping (and hot!) by the time you get there. We have tried to avoid that; in 2009 the logical time to visit was a cruise ship day but we were staying closer and arrived 1st thing and had the place to ourselves. For most folks I think 1-2 hours is plenty.

You could look into crossing on the Hokey Pokey boat and heading north from there - not sure how the timing compares but worked slick for us when we bused from Punta Gorda to Placencia via the boat. I don't know if that would be a time saver or not heading north.

If your budget allows, you could consider flying, too, either to the Belize City municipal airport or Belmopan.

Boat, flight, and bus info here:. Have a great trip!

Thanks. That's very helpful. Think it will be a long day, but the only chance to check out the zoo! Will look into the cruise ship timetables as definitely want to avoid them!

Placencia to Belize Zoo to Caye Caulker is possible in a day.

Two hours is enough time at the zoo.

Regarding the bus...

Are you getting the Ritchie's Express bus from Placencia?

If so, check if the driver will stop the bus at the zoo. Usually, express buses don't stop between main cities & towns, but this is Belize, so anything is possible. If the driver says he can't stop at the zoo, you'll have to get off at Belmopan and change to another Regular bus heading to Belize City. Regular buses will stop anywhere along the route, so just ask the driver/conductor to stop at the zoo. Buses run every 30 minutes so the wait in Belmopan will not be long.

After visiting the zoo, wait on the highway for a bus to Belize City.

Update for people wanting to do the same thing:

As people said, it's very easy to do. We left Placencia on the 6:15 express. We asked if we could get off at the zoo and the guy said yes, but then didn't stop! Apparently he thought we said Belieze City and as it was an express it wouldn't stop at the zoo. We should have got off at Bellmonplan and got a local bus. As it was we changed bus in Belize City and were at the zoo by 11:45 (would have been about 11 if we'd changed in Bellmonplan). The zoo has left luggage lockers free of charge. We spent a cracking couple of hours at the zoo - it was deserted and the keepers were very keen to show off all the animals - calling them and feeding them for us. We then got the bus to Belize City (again!) and a taxi (we had luggage) to the water taxi. We arrived there about 2:50 and got straight on the 3 o'clock boat and we arrive in Caye Caulker by 4. A tiring day, but definitely do-able and a good way to see the zoo without it taking up a whole day.

Thanks again for the advice.
