Hi Freshfields,

I have a 9 and 6 year old so I can relate to your question. If you're looking for family friendly hotels on Ambergris Caye, I would highly recommend Victoria House or Coco Beach.

Victoria House is consistently rated as the top hotel in Belize. They have nice family style villas for rent. They have nice pools and a well kept beach area. You can also rent a golf cart and the kids will love riding around town in it.

Coco Beach is a newer property about 3 miles north of San Pedro. They offer Villas style lodging with kitchens. They also have a dedicated family pool so you don't have to worry about interrupting any honeymooners :0).

As for tours to consider, the manatee safari is fun, kayaking, sailing, reef fishing (calm waters & fun for kids).

If they are water kids you could do a snorkeling trip to Hol Chan and have them wear life jackets. It's inside the reef so you don't have wave issues. You could also add on Shark Ray Alley and plan to watch the sharks and rays from the boat. The water is very clear and they come to the surface. The kids might get freaked out in the water even though the sharks don't have teeth (they're nurse sharks).

Hope this helps!

We recently stayed at Coco Beach and our kids (9 & 11) LOVED it. If your kids like to swim, I just don't see how you can go wrong. The pools are great and the two bedroom suites make it very family friendly.

Our kids love horseback riding in the jungle setting. In the city, they like the Bacab eco park, and Old Belize for the waterslide. On the cayes, they like Hol Chan Marine Reserve. We do the zoo many times a year, did it last week, and they never get tired of it.

Just returned from a short week at Tranquility Bay with my three boys...12, 12, and 14...and TB was awesome...

VERY VERY quiet and isolated but very safe, you can kayak to the reef, food is excellent, and the staff is unreal...you can let your kids have the run of the house...they are always safe...and it is unplugged meaning barely any wifi, no tv in cabanas which are 30 feet from the Sea...and total family time and the kids will love it...unless they must have a pool...but the Sea is awesome as is the beach...

Carlos the manager is all about customer service...and Hill, Albert, Jamal love kids and make them feel like royalty...

All of Belize is very family friendly so there will be a lot of choices. Ambergris Caye has the most going on & biggest selection of hotels so you will probably want to spend part of the time there. Grand Caribe, Portofino, Xanadu, Banyan Bay all have pools with shallow sections good for kids. Some are more remote than others so it depends on what you are looking for. The beach in front of The Palms & Ramon's is one of the best for swimming and the kids are sure to meet other kids there. Blue Tang Inn area is also good for meeting other kids.

Inland, I would suggest perhaps Caves Branch Lodge with its fantastic treehouses, and it is the hub for the local Belizean kids chess clubs - so usually some kids around. Plus they have great tours and lots to do on site. duPlooys is also a good location with kids. if you think you would like to be closer to town and not at a jungle lodge, Midas Hotel in San Ignacio has a nice new pool and the San Ignacio Hotel has the Iguana Breeding program on site. Kids love Belize! Mine have been going since they were babies. Feel free to email me for more ideas. escape@barbsbelize.com
