Hotel walking distance to San Pedro with shore snorkeling?

Help! We're considering booking a trip to Ambergris Caye, but we're not at all sure which resorts we should be looking at. Ideally, we want a resort that is walking distance or easily accessible from the town of San Pedro (love some of the properties that are on the other end of the caye, but we're a family of four and the boat transfer costs sound awful since they appear to be per person). Even better, we want shore snorkeling. Is there such a place?

The only shore snorkeling close to San Pedro is that which is done around some of the piers. Ramon's and Caribbean Villas (and perhaps some others), have started some artificial reefs around their docks. It's not like being at the reef, but we've seen lots of neat things, some rays, a moray eel, a couple nurse sharks, lots of reef fish and a huge sea slug.

Otherwise, as far as I know, it's stay far north, or take a boat to the reef.

The snorkeling at the reef is excellent, but it's not easy to reach. In San Pedro it's is literally worth your life to swim out from shore due to heavy boat traffic that doesn't expect there to be any swimmers in the water. Further north the traffic diminishes and it wouldn't be bad. The alternative is to pay for a ride, which annoys me. We used to go frequently to a resort in Xcalak, Mexico, the next place up the coast from Ambergris, and it was possible to swim to the reef there. There are coral heads with decent fish counts inside the reef, but again you have to deal with the boat traffic.

Even in spite of the excellent diving around AC, the lack of quick and easy snorkeling has put me off Belize in favor of Roatan.

As Jeanh says, there are great places to stay where there is at least some snorkeling off the shore. We just returned from a week at the Palms, just north of Ramon's beach, and the shore snorkeling was good at Ramon's. The walk to town was nothing, and I walked south each morning to a bunch of other rsorts. Town is 5-10 minutes, tops. Condos for 4-6 easily.

We just got back from 4 nights at the Caribbean Villas hotel on Ambergris, which we picked so we could snorkel from their beach. We booked with them directly for a 20% summer discount and stayed 5 people (3 adults, 2 teenage boys) in the Pelican's Perch room - it had 3 separate sleeping areas although only one closed off with a door. The setting for the hotel is ideal but the kitchen fixtures, window blinds inside are sorta funky. The location is perfect - close to town but not right in the hustle, bustle part. There were lots of fish - but tiny ones - in the rocks right by the edge of the beach (not even a foot deep of water). We also paid $35US per person at the Bottom Time dive shop for a boat snorkel trip. Same fish but bigger. I would describe the water everywhere as clear but not crystal clear. Under the hotel pier was really murky due to all the agae on the dock posts but even out on the reef the water was murky in parts. The nature preserve at the hotel is great and the boys loved the hermit crabs that were everywhere in the leaves by the trail. Some other hotel perks: they pick you up from the airport and take you back for free, they give you a free golf cart tour of the town upon arrival, in the office is an extra computer just for free internet use for guests (8am - 6pm), and a bottled water jug where you can fill your own water bottles. No pool or TV though (we had other friends on the same trip who wouldn't stay there for that reason). I didn't go into Ramon's but we saw it - it's right in the town but I don't know if the units there have kitchens.

Shore snorkeling is just not something Ambergris Caye is known for. We just returned from there staying at Capt. Morgan's, and you really have to take a boat to the reef to have any decent snorkeling. We bit the bullet and purchased 4 ferry passes for unlimited rides for 1 week for $40 US per person. The ferry runs north every two hours on the odd hours and runs south every two hours on the evens. So, for example, we would maybe catch the noon ferry into town (5-7 minute ride) then catch the 3pm to return. That is plenty of time to do some shopping and catch a meal.
