Belize - Ambergris Caye - Where to stay?

My husband and I are planning to visit for our anniversary with several other couples in Jan or Feb. I have been researching vacation homes by owners and a few of the resorts. Can anyone offer some advice or tips? Pros or cons? Locations? The vacation home we are looking at is close to the Pelican Reef Villas, I believe, and offers a cook. The Pelican Reef offers free breakfast and has a restaurant. Would we rather stay above San Pedro at Coca Beach? We are looking for relaxation but will want to go out a couple nights on the town. Are the resorts "busy" in Ambergris Caye? Would we have to get up early to get a lounge chair by the pool? Wait in line for a beverage? Any advice or suggestions will help with our decision. Thanks!

My personal preference is staying south of San Pedro. The road is much better, and access to town much easier.

That said, Coco Beach is awesome. Really, really nice pools. We stop by fairly often for a drink at the pool bar. It's never been busy. Belize is an active destination spot. People don't seem to spend large amounts of time lounging around the pool.

Pelican Reef is nice as well. I wouldn't consider it a full service resort. Unless things have changed, I think their restaurant is only open breakfast and lunch. It's about three miles south of town, you'll probably want to rent a golf cart.

In addition to the resorts posted above, I'd also look at Xanadu. Just a bit over a mile south of town, a couple of grocery stores and several restaurants near by. We live near by and walk to town often.

We just stayed at Xanadu last week and had a blast. Really great staff, very accommodating. There is no restaurant on site, but you have a full kitchen in your villa, and you're only a 20 minute walk/10 minute bike ride to town.

We also did one night at El Secreto on the far north part of the island, and while it is absolutely gorgeous, it is so isolated that with only 1 on-site restaurant I would have serious reservations about staying there more than 1 or 2 nights.

Coco Beach is similarly situated, but it is close to Captain Morgan's, so you have a little more variety. I just prefer to have more dining options than that.

Coco Beach also has the restaurant at Belizean Shores, which is right next door. Capricorn isn't very far either.

During the day, it would also been a relatively easy walk to the restaurant at Las Terrazas. Or, in the other direction, Aji, or the small restaurant at White Sands Cove.

I don't know how it would be getting to those places in the dark, I'm never up north after dark.....

Casa Caracol on the beach on Boca Del Rio is a great house rental option. http://www.casacaracol.com/
