Taking the bus from Cancun to Chetumal then to Caye Caulker

We are thinking of taking the bus from Cancun to Chetumal and the water taxi to Caye Caulker? Anybody done it, what is the cost, where do you catch the bus, at the airport? Once at Chetumal, what is the latest the water taxi runs to Caye Caulker, concerned about being able to get it done in one day?

This is how I do the trip from Cancun airport to Belize…

From Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen, there is an approximately hourly ADO Riviera airport shuttle bus (check the ticketbus site for departure times and fares). Tickets are sold from the ticket seller where the bus is parked. To get to the bus, go out of the airport terminal, turn right and keep going to the other end of the terminal. The bus trip to Playa is about 1 hour and costs MX$110 -- that's pesos (as at June 2011).

The airport shuttle bus terminates in Playa del Carmen at the bus terminal at the corner of Quinta Avenida and Avenida Juarez (5th Avenue and Juarez Avenue). If you want to continue to Chetumal immediately, get a taxi (MX$20) to the other bus terminal (Terminal Alterna) at Avenida 20 and Calle 12, where the express buses depart to Chetumal (the airport shuttle bus might stop at this terminal on the way to the other terminal).

Here’s a link to a map of Playa del Carmen showing the location of the two bus terminals:

From Playa del Carmen, ADO express buses depart about every couple of hours to Chetumal. The trip takes about 4.5 hours and costs MX$226 (as at June 2011). Check the ticketbus site for up to date schedules.

Another option for getting from Cancun airport to Chetumal is to get a bus or taxi from the airport to the bus terminal in Cancun city and from there, get an express bus to Chetumal. Cancun airport is located south of Cancun and north of Playa del Carmen, so this means first travelling north to Cancun, then getting a bus back south, but it avoids the bus terminal change in Playa.

There are two water taxi companies providing service between San Pedro and Chetumal (see websites for schedules & fares):

a) San Pedro Water Jets International:

http://www.sanpedrowatertaxi.com/index.html

b) San Pedro – Belize Express:

http://www.belizewatertaxi.com/

Trip time: 90 minutes.

When daylight saving time is in effect in Mexico (April to October), SP Water Jets departs Chetumal at 3:00 pm Mexico time (2:00 pm Belize time), and SP-B Express departs Chetumal at 3:30 pm Mexico time (2:30 pm Belize time).

Both services have same day connecting water taxis between San Pedro and Caye Caulker.

In Chetumal, water taxis use the main pier, “Muelle Fiscal”, which is close to the big Government building, “Palacio Gobierno”, at the waterfront. The pier is visible on Google Earth. Both services have an office at the pier in Chetumal.

If arriving in Chetumal at the ADO bus terminal, there is a little booth inside the terminal where you can get water taxi information. There is (or at least there once was) a water taxi sign and a person who speaks English. You could probably buy a ticket there, but you might get pushed into an overpriced taxi. I’d just go outside to get a taxi, and buy a ticket at the pier.

The pier is about 3.5 km from the ADO terminal. A taxi should take about 10 minutes, and cost MX$15 (that’s pesos). The taxi driver might not know about the water taxi, but he/she will know the pier. Write it down if you can’t pronounce it.

In addition to my previous post...

You can make it to CC on the same day you land if you leave the airport early enough (you didn't say what time you land).

The water taxi services advise that you should be at the pier 30 minutes before the water taxi departs. Immigration is handled at the pier.

Link the the BelizeBus site where you'll find a map of Chetumal showing the locations of the bus terminal and the pier:

You can catch the bus from the airport or downtown Cancun. ADO buses does it. from Cancun, i believe it stops in Playa del Carmen before heading to Chetumal. Great way to break up the trip, and Playa del Carmen & Cozumel has nice snorkeling as well. The water taxi leaves Chetumal and takes about 2 hrs to San Pedro. Then you go through Belize Customs, then catch the same water taxi to Caye Caulker, which is another 2.5 hrs. it's a small covered speed boat. Can be a rough ride. If you get motion sick, bring meds.

MisterB gave great details! If your flight arrives in Cancun early enough you can do it, if not I would recommend staying at the Holiday Inn in Chetumal. There are some markets and a nice mall there if you have to kill time waiting for the boat the next day. Chetumal is quite a nice, clean city for Mex. I have had lots of friends & family go this route to Caye Caulker, including a good female friend of mine on her own, with no travel experience and there were no problems! Might want to bring some form of entertainment for the bus ride tho as I've heard they play spanish movies loud! Lol

We are planning on doing the same thing in January 2012. Have you done your travelling and how did it go? Any suggestions, directions, tips?? did you have to fill out immigration forms (were they easily accessable?) Were you charged fees at the port? If so how much?

Appreciate your help
