Belize International to the ferry terminal...

Can anyone help with some information on how to get from the Belize International Airport to the ferry terminal that goes to Caye Caulker? I was wondering what the best and most cost effective way was. I have heard that a cab for 2 people may be $20(US) or maybe even per person. Sounds like a lot. Any ideas? Thanks!

There are no public buses from Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (PGIA). A taxi to Belize City costs BZ$50.00 (US$25) per taxi, not per passenger, and takes 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic.

The cheap option...

Walk or taxi from the airport to the Philip Goldson (formerly known as the Northern) Highway (about 2.5 km) and wait for a bus. As you approach the intersection with the highway, Belize City will be to your right so just wait on the side of the highway.

When you see a bus coming, wave your arm up and down to get it to stop; Express buses will not stop. The fare to Belize City is BZ$1 or $2, and the bus will terminate at the bus terminal where you can get a taxi to the water taxi terminal.

The water taxi terminal is 1 km from the bus terminal, and an easy walk on sidewalks along main streets (easy if you don't have much luggage).

Thanks for the info! Very helpful! Is PGIA the same as BZE?

Yes, PGIA is the name of the airport. I think BZE is an airline code (or something?).

Is there a website for the water taxi? Is there a ferry or is water taxi the only option? What is the cost and how much time does it take to get to CC? We are a group of 4 adults arriving mid-May.

A water taxi is a boat, with seating for up to about 80 passengers, providing transportation across water (more of a water bus). They would be called ferries in some other countries, but here, they're called "water taxis".

Water taxi services between Belize City, Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye (see websites for schedules & fares).

a) Caye Caulker Water Taxi Association

http://www.cayecaulkerwatertaxi.com

b) San Pedro Water Jets Express

http://www.sanpedrowatertaxi.com/index.html

The abovementioned services operate from the Caye Caulker Water Taxi terminal on North Front Street beside the Swing Bridge. The schedules on each website currently show the combined schedules of the two services.

c) San Pedro – Belize Express Water Taxi

http://www.belizewatertaxi.com/#!home/mainPage

SP-Belize Express operates from the Brown Sugar Market at 111 North Front Street, a few hundred metres from the CCWT terminal.

d) Topic Ferry

http://www.tropicferry.com/

Tropic Ferry offers pick-up at the airport, private a/c shuttle transport to their boat (a 3 minute drive to a marina located across the highway from the airport), boat transport directly to your dock on Ambergris Caye, and they throw in all the rum punch you can drink.

The other option is a flight with one of the 2 airlines: Tropic Air and Maya Island Air.

Thank you. That's a big help. Our flight is supposed to arrive at 11:21am. Is it possible to make the noon water taxi or should we just plan on the 1:30? If we have to wait for the 1:30, is there someplace nearby to grab a bite to eat? Is there a grocery store nearby to pick up a few things?

I can't find on the site how long it takes to get to Caye Caulker. Is it about a hour? The second part of our trip is on Ambergris. How long is that ride? And then from AC back to Belize City?

Thanks again.

It takes about 30 minutes to get through immigration/customs, and then 20 to 30 minutes to get to Belize City by taxi.

The water taxi terminals are in the downtown area -- two big grocery stores (Brodie's and Bottom Dollar) are very close plus a few small ones, and there are several places to eat.

Boat trip times: BC to CC is about 1 hour, CC to AC is about 10 minutes, AC back to BC is a bit under 1.5 hours.

Thank you again. Very helpful. Is getting to the airport 2 hours before our flight home enough time? Just out of curiousity, how large is the airport? We fly in and out of St Thomas, USVI a lot. It has 6 or 8 gates. Is BZE similar size or much bigger?

The airport is small -- maybe two gates??

Two hours should be enough, but a recent traveller reported that she was glad she was 3 hours early because there was a very long queue that was slow moving -- split the difference and make it 2.5 hours. I guess small airport also means not a lot of staff to do the security checks.

The airport is visible on Google Earth, and it has a website:
