Placencia has the edge over San Pedro should you want a combo of both sea and mainland trips staying in one location and thought to have the better beaches. San Pedro is much more socially active and is our most visited destination less than a mile from the reef. Both are grt options

Neither are close to Guatemala. If you would like to visit the market in San Ignacio and head to Guatemala, best to split your trip. Spend a few days in/around San Ignacio and do the inland activities you want. Then, head to one of the beaches.

Re Guatemala. Easy run from Placencia. Fly to Punta Gorda, alternatively bus, and water taxi to either Livingston or Puerto Barrios (both in Guatemala). From San Pedro first get to Belize City, from there you can either fly direct to Flores or overland to San Ignacio and cross into Guatemala there.

Re flights between San Pedro and Placencia, check the web sites of Tropic Air and Mayan Air. Both have service between most major destinations in Belize. For in country travel you want to use the Belize City metropolitan airport not international.

Not much in the way of typical Central American markets in either. Both have souvenir vendors scattered about. Placencia, while developing for tourism, still maintains more of a local Belizean village character. San Pedro is much more developed for tourism.

In general, Belizean markets are not real impressive. PG and San Ignacio do have local markets and both are still very much genuine Belizean towns. Guatemala is a better option for big impressive markets. Chichicastenango is especially popular.

From San Pedro, you will have to get back to the mainland, either by water taxi (75-90 minutes) or a 15 minute flight.

From there, you can either fly to Placencia, I think about 30 minutes, it's been several years since I've flown that route. Or, bus/taxi/private shuttle, somewhere close to four hours.
