Belize / Placencia in November 2012 - Need your input...

Hello -

We are booked for Belize 11/19 to 11/25. We are landing in Belize city after dark and must stay the night in the city until we can catch the puddle jumper to Placencia. I have a few question that I would love some feed back on.

1) Where best to stay in Belize City for the one night? Also, how bad/good is the city to walk around and explore for the one night?

2) Can you pre-book the pubble jumper flights to Placencia or is it a show and go?

3) Placencia - we have booked a private place on the lagoon side and want to know peoples opinions about staying on the lagoon side vs. the beach/ocean side? How safe is it to swim on the lagoon?

4) How safe is Placencia...I have been reading some stuff that can be a little sketchy...

5) I hear that right now Placencia is under water? and there is a problem with the new airprot...anyone know anything about that?

6) In general what do you think of Placencia, what should I do and not do when I'm down there and where should I eat and not eat?

All of your feedback is welcome and thanks in advance.

I will answer one of your questions and let someone else answer the rest. You do not want to walk around Belize City at night. It could be potentially dangerous for you to do so. There's nothing downtown you would want to see at night, anyways. Good luck!

Yes, prebook your flights. Either on Tropic Air or Maya Island Air. Make sure and fly out of the Municipal airstrip, not BZE. It will save you a bit of money.

I haven't been to Placencia since March of 2010. We felt perfectly safe, and we walked everywhere around the village. It's dark in some areas, I'd plan on carrying a flashlight.

I don't know about flooding or a new airport.

I like Placencia. It's a cool little town. I can't think of a thing you shouldn't eat. I'm kicking myself that I didn't try the gibnut lunch special at one of the roadside stands. Even if I was on the way to meet someone for lunch. It isn't every day I get a chance to dine on the 'royal rat'.......

Some of your questions have been answered so I will respond to the others.

I have seen people swimming in the lagoon but I have also seen crocodiles there. I think it is better to walk over to the sea side beach - afterall, Placencia has the best beaches in Belize.

Placencia is safe but we do get some petty burglaries, so make sure you have good security on the place you re renting or take your valuables with you whenever you go out.

School was closed yesterday because of flooding due to a lot of rain. Closing the school because of flooding due rain is rare.

Construction started on a new airport and hotel and casino several years ago and then stopped about the middle of last year. That will have no impact on your trip to Belize.

An option to staying in Belize City is staying at the Black Orchid Resort in Burrel Boom, a short drive away. The hotel will pick you up and bring you back for your flight. Otherwise Lucy's suggestions in Bz City are good, and I would also add the Radisson Fort George or D'Nest Inn. The Biltmore or D'Nest is closest to the airport. Definitely don't walk around alone at night, but there are some good restaurants to try, just take a taxi.

In Placencia, is there a particular reason you are staying on the lagoon side? Most of the hotels and houses are along the sea side. But most of the peninsula is very narrow so you can easily walk across to the sea side to swim. Are you staying in Placencia proper (village at the S tip) or in one of the other communities like Maya Beach or Seine Bight? Everyone calls all of the peninsula "Placencia" but it is really just the Southern end village, and the peninsula is about 12 or 15 miles long, I think. So which part of the peninsula you are on may make a difference in answering your questions.

Thanks Barb! I have added D'Nest Inn to our website, I appreciate this good recommendation. Their website is really good. Looks like a great place to stay in BC.

Hi & Thank you for your input - everyone it is fantastic

Somone asked where we were staying.... This is what someone else wrote about its location:

Located in Placencia village, which is at the southern end of the peninsula.

In the Marina district and on the lagoon side of the peninsula. The house was beautiful and situated well for accessing the village.

How do we get from the airport to the place we are staying...are there taxi's?

Yes, there are taxis. They were waiting at the airstrip when we flew in from Belize City.
