there are plenty of competent guides available. bus or car depends on you, both will work, maybe a mix of both. use gmaps and youtube as planning aids.

If you're going to the cayes, you won't need a car for that part of your trip.

For travelling to the Cayo district, buses run frequently and are cheap. For getting around, taxis might be cheaper than a car rental.

If you're heading down to Hopkins, Placencia & Punta Gorda, a car rental would be the best option.

I would use a guide or hire a driver. Renting a car for month would be spendy. Use Tropic Air or Maya Air to get there faster and not too expensive. Depends what you will be doing and where you want to go. We didn't use the bus system but I heard it was OK. Hard to haul luggage because they are like Bluebird School Buses. Our first day was being picked up by Major Tom in Belize City and he took us cave tubing and zip-line and then drove us to San Ignacio @ $100.00/each. Next day we hired a guide to see the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins and do the ATM Cave. We visited Dangriga, Placencia, Monkey River and wrapped up the trip at San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. What a trip!
