Tamarindo sewage? another surfing town?

Hi. I heard about the major sewage problem in Tamarindo. I am now trying to find a replacement city to go to. We want a beach atmosphere and to take a surfing lesson...any suggestions?

For the record, there is no "sewage problem" in Tamarindo. Unusually heavy rains this past year temporarily caused some septic tanks to overflow and heavy river runoff from the countryside. Since then, the problem septic systems have been dealt with, and recent water tests have shown bacterial figures well within the accepted guidelines. Its business as usual in Tamarindo, so please don't change your plans because of a problem that happened months ago. Enjoy your holiday!!

puramar - last I heard they would do the re-testing in January. If, as you say, they have already done the re-testing I must've somehow missed the results. Could you provide a link to the new tests?

To the OP - I would suggest Mal Pais.

We own a place in Playa Langosta which is really part of Tamarindo. We were down in Costa Rica the first two weeks in December. So, recent water tests are clean of any sewage runoff. The poor water ratings occured during the wetest rainy season in 40 years,October/November of this year. The effected areas were at the mouth of river inlets in Tamarindo town. You should check out Tamarindo for eating and drinking. There are exceptional beaches north and south within a half hour drive that are perfect for getting away, surfing, swimming. Playa Langosta is 5 minutes north and pristine-you can walk from town.

Don't be afraid of the water.

My wife, daughter, and I were just in Tamarindo Jan. 31st & Feb. 1st. My daughter and I waded across the northern tidal estuary to Playa Grande both days. My wife choice not to. We have now returned to Colorado. My wife is OK. My daughter & I both are still exhibiting some form of contact dermititis - splotchy rash, widely scattered in small spots, that we attribute to wading across that tidal estuary. It would appear there is still something in the water. Nogui's still has the best coconut cream pie on the planet though!

I was Tamarindo last week and the water appeared fine. There can still be problems during the rainy season, but it should be perfectly okay to swim in during the dry season. And it is a great spot to find surf lessons. (There are 10+ surf camps! Just walk down the street to find one with good boards and good rates) www.puramar.com, www.tamarindosurfschool.com, www.witchsrocksurfcamp.com, etc..

As alternatives, try Nosara (www.safarisurfschool.com) or Santa Teresa (www.hotelbuenisimo.com) or Dominical (www.greeniguanasurfcamp.com) for more of a 'jungle' setting and some great instructors.
