less touristy, moderate climate area to explore?

This is my second trip to CR. Any suggestions for a less touristy, moderate climate area to explore--probably in the mountains. My husband and I love nature, wildlife, hiking etc but do not like extreme heat.

If you don't like the heat at the lowland beaches and you want to stay away from the crowds, I'd suggest San Gerado de Dota (great birding), the Orosi valley, and the Turriabla areas. Also, climbing Mt. Chirripo if you are up to it. What time of the year is your trip? T

You may like a place like Bosque de Paz, near Bajos del Toro, it's about 2 hours from San Jose. It's a higher elevation, so definitely cooler, I needed the extra blankets they supply at night. They have tons of trails to explore and the food is included (since you're not really close to anywhere to eat).
