Lava viewing

I understand that the lava flow changes. Is there a typical pattern to this? We are traveling in February and would like to stay at a hotel with a good view. Any help would be appreciated.....

The lava flow has been in the S/SW side of the mountain. You can visit www.arenal.net/arenal-costa-rica-map.htm which shows the changes in the lava flow over the years. As of now, the best hotel view is at Arenal Observatory Lodge. Its close and directly in front of the activity. We stayed there once, and also at Linda Vista del Norte, which also has great views, but a little further away. Hotels on this side are more isolated from the rest of the 'action' in the area, so its good to have a car to get out. Food is not a highlight at either of these hotels, so you might want to explore other restaurants too.

Are there tours that companies offer to visit the lava flows at night (when applicable)? And if so how much and names please ;-)

Thanks!

One way to do it...if the volcano is clear...call a mini van local private service...and hire the van for a trip to El Castillo...driving around from almost anywhere around the volcano from La Fortuna to El Castillo in a clear night...you will have GREAT chances to see a LOT of lava...

Hotel with good view,,,Lost Iguana, Los Lagos, Arenal Paraiso, Montana de Fuego...Mountain Paradise, Kioro, etc.

Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in paradise!!

Lava flow better observed from side opposite from La Fortuna, in the village of El Castillo. We found the Majestic Lodge satisafactory, nice view from the property and not too far from Hotel Linda Vista where we had a decent dinner with a fantastic view of Arenal at sunset and sun setting over Lago Arenal. Get there at 4:30 for a table on the outdoor terrace for best views.

We hired a taxi to take us to Linda Vista del Norte for dinner and back. Linda Vista had great food and we were able to watch the volcano erupt all throughout dinner. We thought that was a much better way to do than going to the viewing points---lots of people and I wouldn't have enjoyed as much as being able to watch it for a couple of hours.
