Tourist Speeding Ticket -- BEWARE of Police Scam in CR

If you are a tourist and getting a rental car discuss the speeding ticket issue with agent at car rental when you rent your car..

It is a scam in CR -- we got hit on Hwy 18 and they

wanted over $100 cash from us. They will take any

cash you have however so insist on paying it at

rental car agency.. just tell them you have no cash.

They tell you it will cost twice as much to pay

at rental car agency.. they lie! The police that

stopped us would not let us go until we gave them

$.. we acted liked we had but a very small amount which

they took and of course then tore up the ticket! We

were nice however as we did not want to spend the day

there nor have them come up with something else and

take us in! You never know.

Also make sure you have a copy (copy only) of your

passport with you when traveling around CR.. they

asked for that also.

Area is great other than this, the CR drivers, and

lack of directional signage out of the smaller villages... keeps you guessing til you get there!

Also if you go to Monteverde off of Hwy 1 thru Las

Juntas be aware you must go over the stream/river

to your left to be on the correct paved (part of the

way) road up.. and there are very few signs so

be alert. If you miss this you will end up in

a village called San Antonio..from there if you have

4WD you can take the very small and very bumpy jeep

road.. on a post along the way you will see a very

small sign with the hand painted word Monteverde

and an arrow! Been there and done that!

Good luck on both counts!
