Had a FANTASTIC time, here are some details...Hotel Grano de Oro quite charming although our particular rooms were pretty basic, very nice restaurant although overall we were not impressed by the food in CR...all day rafting trip down the Pacuare with Rios Tropicale, guide was Christian, great guy, rapids weren't super-challenging as the water level is somewhat low but prettiest scenery I have seen on a rafting trip, great waterfalls...Torteguero was quite unique, stayed at Manatus Lodge, great people, rooms a bit on the basic side for a "luxury" hotel...took the river tour the next morning, Chito was our guide, sort of a water-safari...caimans, monkeys (actually had monkeys right on the hotel properties), iguanas, lots of gorgeous birds, got a little boring at times but something different, wish we could have seen turtle nesting but wrong time of year...also went over to the town of Torteguero, interesting for 30 min but that's about it...flew onto Arenal, 2 fun-filled days...stayed at The Springs (see separate review), fantastic property although isolated...started with horseback ride to Fortuna waterfall, not your basic trailride, they really let you take off a bit which was fun, 45 min ride, 45 min at the waterfall (it's quite a hike!) and 45 min back...another rider got kicked by a horse pretty good on the shin and the guides responded appropriately and quickly...next day did the Hanging Bridges tour, again not exactly an African safari but interesting, not as much wildlife as I expected, beautiful birds including a toucan, monkeys, mostly plant specimens though, insects, etc, would be better if it was 30-60 min shorter...than transferred directly to Pure Trek for canyoning tour, fun but a tiny disappointing...the first rappel is the best one, 150 ft alongside a waterfall, but you're nervous since it's the first one and the rest are small by comparison, 5 rappels in all...guides were particularly great on this tour, beautiful scenery...next day we finished our adventures with the Sky Tram/Sky Trek zipwire, fantastic...the gondola up the mountain was a little dull but great views...the zipwires were great!!! incredible views of the volcano and Lake Arenal, couple of the runs were very long, 45-60 sec long, quite thrilling overall. Flew onto Guanacaste for a couple of days at the beach at the Marriott (separate review), nice hacienda-style property, good service, huge pool area, 3 restaurants which as perfect for as since we were there 3 nights without a car. Had great weather (20 min. of rain on the boat ride in Torteguero), saw the whole volcano a number of times when the clouds lifted (no lava though, clouds rolled in at night), the people of Costa Rica were great, very warm and helpful, appreciative of their tourists! ATMs are very had to come by, the only one we saw was at the San Jose airport, and those tips for all the guides really added up. The roads are as bad as many reports say, once you get off the main road for instance in Arenal it's VERY bumpy, don't underestimate how long it can take to get around! Would love to go back to see Monteverde and Osa Peninsula, that will be the next trip! Glad to answer any questions.
