Where can I find step-by-step instructions for Rte 27 to SJO

We will be traveling from MA to SJO via the new toll road in March. Where can I find step-by-step directions on how to get from Route 27 to SJO airport?

Looking at the map, it seems there are several ways you could do it, but I am sure a 2 dimensional map doesn't tell the whole story. Personal experience from helpful ticos and recent tourists would be better!

There is not a easy exit on the western approach to the airport yet. (May 2010 is what we are hearing)

Right now, the easiest way for a tourist would be to take the new road (rte 27E) to the 39N (called the periferica, or the circunvalacion - this is a highway that encircles San Jose). From the 27, after passing Multiplaza, Cima, Pricesmart landmarks on the right, pass thru the toolbooths and stay to the right. You will see the 39 overpass ahead of you. Go under the overpass and take the next exit on the right - (signs should say Pavas & Uruca - can someone correct me if I'm wrong?) to go up onto the 39 heading N. Go past exits for Pavas and look for the right exit ramp marked with an airplane sign. That ramp takes you to the airport highway (Rte 1, Autopista General Canas). Follow this highway for about 10 minutes. Airport is easy to see and well marked from here. There are a few other options, but I think its much easier to get lost using them.

In general, signs are not good. Rte numbers rarely used. And there is only one warning for an exit.

Maybe the best way is...drive all the way to La Sabana...at Mc.Donalds...make a left...and just keep going all the way to the airport!

Thank you for your replies. I was able to follow your directions on the Toucan map I have and it was easy to follow.

In the mean time, I did also find these directions in a post by sd705:

"From the airport go towards San Jose, at the casino ( right past the airport) take a right. When the road hits a T intersection after 4 K´s take a right, when you see the Panasonic plant take a left at the next light and go straight about 2 K´s, you ´ll see the freeway overpass, take a right before."

Would these directions (in reverse, of course) by too hard to follow?

Thanx for any additional input. I do appreciate it.

Hi Perdita - Yes, you could reverse those directions that that is one route I would take, depending on the time of day it is, because I am familiar with the area. I did not suggest if for you because it is not well marked and because the route in on surface roads with lots of stop and go traffic. That is a very dense suburban area filled with strip malls and associated commerical traffic. Its much smoother to go highway, to highway, to highway, even though on the map it looks to be a longer drive.

Roadadvisor's route is even longer than mine, but again its easier than the alternative you are suggesting because you are unlikely to get lost.

This is for your return trip, so you will be accustomed to local driving habits by the time you are leaving, but in general Tico's drivers are pretty intense. You should take the easy way recommended by locals rather than what looks logical on a map (I say this as a logical, map loving Gringa with 10+ years of experience trying to find places and things in Costa Rica).

During the daytime rush hours and on Saturday, the alternate you are asking about is filled with people who need to get to the store, get to work, make their delivery, pick up the kids, etc.,, etc. Its not a Pura Vida road! If you are traveling during off hours and want to try it, exit the highway in Santa Ana and take the cross road to the north, there should be Pizza Hut on the right side of the road. Follow this road to the end and you will see signs for the Marriott and the airport. Follow these signs. Once you pass the Marriott continue to follow signs to the airport. The airport highway will be up ahead of you. Enter the highway and go west towards the airport. You are now about 8 minutes from the airport.

Since you have to take this portion of the highway on any of the routes, I am still a fan of of my highway, highway, highway route or Road's quick peek at La Sabana - a large park in the City.

On your next trip, it will be easier! Good luck!

surfer: In Perdita's Post #3, she is referring to the road across from the Fiesta Casino ... correct? The road that is at the end of the runway. If I'm reading these post corrrectly, where do your directions bring her out on to the highway .... near the Cariari? I know it's not the road across from the Fiesta b/c you can't turn left there to get onto the airport road. I'm sorry if I'm throwing a monkey wrench into this but I've tried every which way to get to the A/P via the new highway without overshooting it and it's been disaster. I tried Turrucares last week, definitely NOT a good route. Thanks for your input.

Perdita: the reason why I'm trying to "tweek" this is that it's been my experience that once you've taken an incorrect ramp it's difficult to get your bearings to get turned around. (and surfer is right, it is not easy to figure out the ramps as there is little warning) There is a solid median in many of these roads so it's impossible to make a u-turn to get yourself righted.

Hi Lisa - Yes, I agree. It is possible to leave the airport by taking a right at the road at the end of the runway (across from the Fiesta) and then work your way to the Santa Ana exit of the new highway following the directions she cites, but I have not been able to reverse that route for several years. Something changed and I'm sorry I can't remember for sure what that was. I think they made it impossible to go straight to the Fiesta or make a left towards the airport. Anyhow, I just remember crossing that off my list and using the route I suggested.

And so, I advised that the easiest way for a tourist to go (if they insist on using the more direct looking surface roads) would be to follow the many signs towards the Marriot and then airport signs as they appeared. Yes, you enter at the Cariari exit.

Adding to the complication for most tourists, of course, is the need to drop off a car at a rental office. So, all of these directions need to be tweaked in case you are not going directly to the airport but instead to an off-airport office. They are clustered in several different areas.

I hope this helps. I can't wait for the new exits to be created so there is an easier link from the airport to the new highway.

surfer: Thanks for your response. That was the info I was looking for exactly! I just couldn't visualize your suggested route until you confirmed that it came out at the Cariari. I need to be in Uruca in two weeks so I'll confirm that exit ramp sign Uruca/Pavas ... all I know is that is sure comes up quickly! Again, thanks for the help and clarification.
