Osa Peninsula to Caribbean Coast

We're planning our first trip to Costa Rica in August 2010 for four adults. We'd like to see as much wildlife as possible and do some snorkeling, diving and possibly getting our son SCUBA certified as well. We'd really like to avoid crowded and touristy areas. With that in mind, we're considering dividing our time between the southern Osa Peninsula and the southern Caribbean coast. Renting a vehicle seems to be the best option as we'll be there 12-14 days and would like to see as much as we can. Considering the distance between the Osa Peninsula and, let's say, Cahuita, should we plan on staying overnight somewhere in between? Is a 3 or 4 day stay in Osa long enough, or should we plan for more? What areas of the Caribbean coast should we be focusing on for a low-key environment and proximity to nice quiet beaches? Any advise, comments and suggestions are welcome!

You'll need to spend the night somewhere in between, maybe Turrialba area, on the Caribe Sur, Punta Uva would be a great spot for you guys, while scuba and snorkeling is available on the Caribbean, is sometimes limited visibility due to weather. Still a must visit on your visit to Costa Rica.

A 5-6 night stay in each area would be ideal. During August you can expect maybe a little more rain than some other times of year so staying put will increase the odds of more dry time to do the activities you want. At least that's the way I look at it! ;-)

Thanks to you both! I'll start looking around the Turrialba area. About how long of a drive is that, anyway?

You might also want to consider to stay overnight at San Gerardo de Doto on you way to the Carribean. Very nice area and the best place in all of Costa Rica to see the famous Quetzal.

San Gerardo de Dota is also a great choice, it will take you about 8 hours to Turrialba and about another 31/2 to Puerto Viejo area.
