Are we nuts?

We would like to fly in to Liberia, fly out of San Jose- take about 10 to 12 days driving the coast starting in North Pacific working down to Golfito- is this doable? Will make a couple of reservations before we go but would really like to "wing" it if possible. Any advice would be appreciated- good or bad! Thanks

Not crazy at all. There is plenty of available places to stay. Just realize that there is no coastal road like Hwy 1 in California. Driving down the coast will take more time than you probably realize. But, sounds like a fun trip!

Sounds like fun to me

The roads in the southern Nicoya Peninsula are pretty basic. Even buses don't go that way. Some legs will require crossing rivers. A lot of how "doable" it is will depend on what time of year you come. It would be more difficult in rainy season.

Whether you "wing it" or not will also depend on what time of year you come. As Inca suggested, be sure to spend some time looking at the map.

Otherwise - it does sound like a great adventure, if that's what you want.

Thanks everyone- the map is a wonderful tool- Thanks Incabod- we will be coming in February - realize that might be a little risky winging it as far as accomodations- will rent a four wheel drive but not sure that's much help crossing a river! We like adventure as long as there is a beach or fishing boat at the end of the road, but don't want to be dumb!

Well yes I think you're a bit nuts but that's because I'm a planner! :-) But yes you can wing it...my advice is to make sure to rent a 4x4 (high clearance is good for those water crossings), absolutely make sure to get a GPS and you guys will have a great time! ;-) It's beautiful here and the people are so friendly so no matter where you end up it will be awesome!

Another useful driving times map at

trycostarica.com/p/costa-rica-driving-times

Looks somewhat outdated (e.g., no time even given for Manuel Antonio to Dominical, much less one that reflects the improved Costanera), but in some ways more useful than yourtravelmap in that you can see all of its times without route-by-route queries.

Okay, think we are getting close to being settled on at least towns & have a few reservations- open to any comments or suggestions- 3 nights- Taramindo- Casa Cook (we need a little "luxury"- been a rough winter!)- then to Samara for 2 nights- Hotel Fenix- will stop around Jaco for 2 nights, then on to Zancudo at Coloso Del Mar 4 nights, then back to Liberia w/1 night stop along the way and then last night in Liberia to catch a plane the next day. 13 nights total- too many stops? Must do along the way or where we are going? Will stop to see a friend in Nosara if we can work it out- appreciate any help- give it to us straight! Thanks

Help again please!- based on our Taramindo to Samara to Zancudo & back to Liberia itinerary need suggestions please on the following activities that hubby has told everyone we will be doing during our two weeks in beautiful Costa Rica- horseback riding on the beach, zipline tour, & deep sea fishing and he will at least stand up on a surf board before we return home!- any specifics for these activites would be much appreciated & we will spend the rest of the time just lying in a hammock- this is a great forum- thanks for all the great info we've gotten so far!
