car rental GPS

A lot of people have mentioned getting a GPS with a car rental. Is there any reason not to bring your own with Costa Rica maps loaded on it?

You can absolutely bring your own GPS. You just have to purchase the Costa Rica maps ahead of time. Once you purchase it you usually download it to your computer and then upload it onto your GPS. :-)

You can get maps for CR and input them into your GPS but that does not mean they will provide route guidance or take you to a specific location by name, like a parque or hotel.

Travelbygps.com has a GPS dataset with maps and with local waypoints. Better deal than the $10 a day that the outfits at the rental car company locations charge and the one I recently looked at at the airport did not include any of my planned destinations in the waypoints so was of little value.

We just rented a GPS with the SUV - most of the interesting points were preloaded. The Costa Rica download for our Garmin was very expensive for a one shot use! We were very happy? Don't miss Manuel Antonio!
