Hotels in Costa Rica

We need an overnight in San Jose (Suggestions?), we are looking at the Pachira lodge in Tortuguero, Volcano lodge and Gardens in La Fortuna, (Suggestions?) in Monteverde, and the Riu all inclusive in Liberia. I've read the reviews on here, but would like your opinion as well. Thanks for your thoughts

In San Jose I like Adventure Inn and Casa 69.

In Tortuguero I would go for Aninga Lodge which is part of Pachira group.

In the Arenal area, El Silencio del Campo is my favourite but Volcano Lodge and Gardens is very nice too and has a great pool area.

In Monteverde, I like El Sapo Dorado and Las Orquideas B&B. Belmar is very nice too.

RIU - not my cup of tea, sorry :o)

In Tortuguero, I would go for Casa Marbella. It is in the village of Tortuguero where the other lodges are not, some across the lagoon from the village. Look here for more information - www.tortuguerovillage.com

It depends on what you are looking for in the Arenal area. My favorite is Arenal Observatory Lodge.

I would definitely not recommend staying at the RIU. There have been a number of discussions here about their environmental problems so not a place I could recommend. There are lots of other really nice places to stay in the northern Pacific area.

We just got back yesterday and visited Tortuguero on a tour through Exploradores Outdoors that I found through Adveture Inn. A one-night package for $199 includes transport to Tortuguero from Arenal, San Jose or Puerto Viejo, boat to the lodge at the Evergreen lodge complex, tour of the city of Tortuguero, a morning hike, a tour around Tortuguero National Park by boat (there is a $10 entrance fee), five meals during the two days, and dropoff at Arenal, San Jose or Puerto Viejo. We thought it was a great value since it included pick-up and drop-off at any of the three places.

I agree with momzee, for what you pay you get a great value. I did this tour myself and we send a lot of our clients with Exploradores Outdoors. They do a great job and the guides are excellent. Hardly get a bad feedback of this tour. For me personally, the only "downside" is the lodge (Rana Roja), which is a bit more simple and the food kind of blend. That's why I prefer Aninga or Pachira.

But then, if you only spend one night in Tortuguero, it does not really matter at which lodge you stay as you hardly spend time there apart from sleeping. And the beds at Rana Roja were very comfortable :o)

I am trying to decide whether to go to Tortuguero. Was it worth the expense and effort? Too early for turtles, right?

Depends when you go. I was there last Thursday - too early for turtles. We did see a leatherback in Manzanillo down by Puerto Viejo.

We also stayed at Grano de Oro. It's a wonderful hotel.

Sandi- i think Tortuguero is worth is even if you don't see turtles. The canal boat rides and the jungle hikes and just walking on the beach were all great. yes we got the added benefit of watching thousands of baby turtles hatch ut not all my family was on that beach hike with us and they still enjoyed the area.
