We are looking to visit Costa Rica in January and looking for lodging requirements. We would like to stay close to the beach and the rainforest but would prefer to avoid large resorts. We like to relax and enjoy the beach but would also like to be able to walk to waterfalls and enjoy nature.

1. Re: Lodging

you might need to do both beach and mountain

try playa grande, there are homes in the middle of the forest within walking distance to the beach

then choose a mountain area to stay a couple nights,

If you're flying into San Jose check out Dominical and Uvita. Maybe Tiki Villas on a hill overlooking the ocean.

I agree with Sonny about Montezuma for beach, jungle & walkable waterfalls (Montezuma waterfalls). You can also horse-ride to El Chrro waterfalls There are no large resorts here at all. If your budget allows it , Ylang Ylang is right on the beach, at the edge of the jungle in beautiful gardens. If your budget doesn't stretch that far I can recommend other places.

I like the idea too of having a day or two in the mountains Arenal or Monteverde
