fall bird watching in CR

We are wanting to go bird watching in the fall and are wondering if there are good places to go in CR. We were told it's rainy then - true?

This is a great source of information for birding: http://www.costaricanbirdroute.com/sites.htm

"The fall" - meaning September, October -- will be part of the rainy season in Costa Rica. However, the weather is not the same all over the country. Look here for typical rainfall patterns: costa-rica-guide.com/Weather/WeatherMap.html

In many places, you will find afternoon rains are common, thus giving you an opportunity to get in a good morning of birding.

Hattie is correct, it's the rainy season, but even in rainy season, I've been to the Osa Peninsula (one of the wettest areas in CR) a couple times in Sept and still had good mornings before rains came in the afternoons. Of course there is no gaurantee. But there are birds all over CR and you are sure to see some. During the rainy season, the Palo Verde has a huge amount of migratory birds. In any case, If you don't mind 'watching' in a shower, you will see birds!

It is part of the rainy season but parts of the day will be sunny and nice. Some good areas for birding are Sarapiqui, Monteverde, San Gerado de Dota, Palo Verde, Cano Negro just to mention a few

You can check out some birding lodges on Costa Rica Gateway website. They specialize in birding tours and will set up hotels for you at same rate as doing it yourself.

We had all day rains at Rancho Naturalista in Nov. and still had excellent birding from the porch area.

We've seen some nice birds in Monteverde, Arenal, Tortuguero, and the Osa. Monteverde has nice cool weather birds like quetzals, while you'll see scarlet macaws, toucans, etc. in the Osa, and water birds in Tortuguero and Cano Negro. We've hired a birding guide through Sunset Tours in Arenal and have seen quite a lot doing that as well; there are toucans in the area. Always hear nice things about Rancho Naturalista and San Gerardo de Dota as well. I would skip the Osa around late September and October. This is a nice map for showing general weather patterns. Mouse over the areas you're interested in. I think it's the same one that Hattie posted. Not always accurate but will give you a good idea of what to expect.
