First time advice

We are looking for a trip with three grown sons, youngest is 16. We have never been to Costa Rica and most packages from Toronto are AI which is actually best option with our family for convenience and price. I am also looking at various week long tour options. We are interested in touring the Arenal Volcano, Monteverde and would love a river tour also. What is the best area to use as our base to keep travel as short as possible for the trips? I am considering Playa Tambor, Flamingo Beach, Playa Longesta, Occidental Grand Papagayo and Hilton Papagayo based on dates of departure from here as we have a limited time that we can all go over New Years. We would love wild life at the resort and while snorkeling would be great, not a must. Also, are overnight tours offered once there that may combine some of these trips? We have no interest in renting a car. Any comments or advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

It appears from the beaches you mention you are looking at flying in Liberia. That works because you have Rincon de la Vieja fairly close. You could go all the way to Arenal if you wanted, but you might consider Rincon due to proximity.

Flamingo and Langosta are the same distance to Liberia airport. About 1 hour. Papagayo is a little closer. Tambor is very difficult to get to. Driving down the peninsula is a nightmare. About 20 miles of rocky, unmaintained jungle road. You can take a ferry across from the mainland but that takes hours.

That said, you can do a lot in any of the beaches you mention. Here's an activity list for Langosta (southern part of Tamarindo): beachcondotamarindo.com/tamarindo-activities…

Keep in mind New Years is the busiest week of the year at any of the beaches in Costa Rica, so make reservations early.

Good luck!

Thank you. Would we need to book the day trips ahead of time? Are any of the places I mentioned better than the others in terms of wildlife, beach or walking distance to a town?
