Castros Bar in Barrio Mexico is a great place, salsa dancing on the main floor and karaoke on the second. All taxis know it.

Have a great vacation.

Be extra carefulll the area around that bar is not very safe at night...maybe go there with a local...in my case I live in San Jose and I will not take the chance to go there at night...not many nice people around...just common sense!!

Some nice safe places around Escazu...and still San Jose in case some proffesor like to correct me...

San Pedro can be cool. It is the university part of town but isn't just a young crowd. Keep your wits about and you'll be fine. Check out listings for the Jazz Cafe - great places to listen to live music, have a few drinks and maybe even dance!

Your demographics would assist in providing suggestions, but The Jazz Cafe is an excellent suggestion if you want to see some live music. The name is misleading as the genres are quite varied. There are actually two locations – San Pedro and Escazu. You can check out the line up for your date at their website. http://www.jazzcafecostarica.com/ A very popular area for nightlife in San Jose – particularly for the younger crowd is “El Pueblo”, but it gets very mixed reviews. Google it - read the reviews and decide if it is for you. If you go – do it in a group and take cabs – just as you would in any major city that you are not familiar with. Have fun but stay safe.

I will be in San Jose next week as well. How far is Escazu from San Jose? Is bus or taxi recommended getting around in the evening?

Main concern is getting around safely. I want to avoid trouble. I've heard stories about corrupt taxi drivers. Not trying to be judgemental, but what should I look out for?

Make sure the taxi has a meter, make sure the meter is clear when you enter and running as you begin your journey, then it is almost impossible to be ripped off as the cost of your trip is there when you get there.

Escazu isn't so far from San Jose (depends which part of San Jose really) but I would go for a taxi at night for sure.
