Travelling Solo - Looking to Surf/Relax for a week

Hi All,

So I have 1 week vaca to use up in Nov or Dec this year and I seem to be the only one out of my close friends. Regardless, I want to head south as I desperately need to get out of this country! I'm thinking of heading to Costa Rica whether solo or with a couple buddies. I like surfing but have only done it a few times, definately considered a "beginner". I'm 27 and male.

Would you recommend Costa Rica for a solo traveller? If so any recommended locations/hostels/beaches etc. for someone in demographic and circumstances?

Any advice for those who know Costa Rica would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Adam

Yes its a great and safe place to have fun and learn to surf.

Were you go depends on what you are looking for:

Tamarindo - Great surfing, night life and very developed and the most touristy spot. Good choice of restaurants and bars.

Jaco - Good Surfing again developed and big party town (mini Daytona Beach IMO).

Dominical - Small surf town, more off the beaten track great surfing in the area, layed back with a choice of restaurants and bars, some night life. Popular with backpackers loads of Rainforests, eco tours and within a short distance many of deserted beaches. Surf schools in the area: http://www.bodhisurfschool.com , http://www.sunsetsurfdominical.com/ ,

I can't speak to the surfing conditions in Puerto Viejo but if I was a solo male traveller, I would head there! More of a Caribbean vibe with lots of nightlife, great restaurants and really chill people.

Yes there is surfing in Manuel Antonio, not the best in Costa Rica but will work for beginners. The surfing in the Caribbean is seasonal so hopefully someone from there will "chime in".

I loved Puerto Viejo and would definitely go there solo. Surf Cocles beach and Id stay at Rockin Jays or Totem. I just got back from there a few weeks ago. I did hear though that the waves start getting smaller this time of year so someone will need to chime in about that time of year.

You should go to Bella Vista Lodge near Dominical. GREAT surfing in Dominical and the lodge is super chill and no doubt will you meet other surfers. Awesome views, super cool horseback trail ride to a waterfall, great food, you won't want to leave!!

I've stayed there a couple times and I'm always sad when I have to leave.
