Thoughts on our Trip?

Young couple (25) going to be doing 2 weeks in CR. Wanted thoughts on this Itinerary, if it will be a good match. We like to explore, hike, adventure around, but also love to relax on the beach. Looking for nightlife too. Big into photography.

Will be renting an SUV.

Days 1-4 San Jose

-staying downtown

-Probably head up to the volcano, check out museums, just get our bearings, try some nightlife, good restaraunts.

Days 4-8

-drive to Monteverde, have a hotel booked already in Santa Elena

-Cloud forest, canopy tour, hikes, etc

Days 8-11

-drive to Tamarindo (is this town "too old" of a crowd?)

-check out the beaches, probably head south to get to some more secluded beaches

-nightlife, food?

-generally try to explore the more southern region of Guanacaste

Days 11-15

-Finish off the trip in Playa De Coco

-explore the northern portions of Guanacaste

-beaches, etc

-nightlife, food?

Fly out of Liberia.

We will be there for new years, is Playa De Coco a good spot for New years? Looking to party.

Are Tamarindo and Playa de Coco different enough that it warrants staying in the two different towns? Like I said, explore the southern area from Tamarindo, northern area from Playa de Coco?

Thanks for your thoughts!

No need to stay any night in San Jose. Driving out of San Jose (and back in) is a time consuming job. You will find some nightlife and many good restaurants elsewhere. Add some time at Arenal for outdoor activities and photography. If wildlife is your target then add some days at Sarapiqui. Also Rincon de la Vieja is a rewarding location. Generally best time for photography is early morning.

Really? That's interesting, skipping the capital. I figure there's gotta be some stuff worth seeing? Or using it as a base camp to head out of town towards arenal?

It's not worth getting in there for a day and roaming around the shopping areas?

Thanks for the help.

Wow, that's quite a drive out of town to arenal.

We don't land untli the middle of the day on the first day. I don't think we could make arenal by night fall. Adding Arenal also adds quite a bit of drive time to the trip.

Is it worth the 3 hour drive to Arenal, and then the more brutal 4 hr drive from Arenal to Monteverde? To only be in Arenal for 2 days?

We don't want to spend all our time in a car :-) But Arenal looks beautiful!!

Depending on your interests, you could either stay in the San Jose area (outside of city limits there are lots of lovely places) and tour the Central Valley (there are two volcanoes--Poas and Irazu--that you could tour, La Paz waterfalls, Pacuare rafting, Orosi valley, towns of Grecia and Sarchi, coffee plantations).

Some people like to visit the city, others don't. To me, diverting time in Costa Rica from nature to stay in San Jose is like taking time away from Paris in France to do wildlife tours.

Arenal is about 3 hours away from SJO. If you leave by about 2 pm, you should be okay. Or, you could spend the night near the road to Arenal (places like Orquideas Inn) and drive out the next morning.

Arenal area is worth checking out. It tends to be a bit overrated as it's the place everyone has been to, so it gets recommended more. Its main features are a wide range of activities and lodging choices, the volcano, and hot springs. It's not the greatest for hiking or wildlife (outside of a couple of places).

I think we'd like to see San Jose itself.

Is there any problem with staying downtown? And then branching out from there?

We'd like to see the culture, architecture, food, night life, museums, coffee plantations.
