First of all, thank you to all who contribute to this forum. It was so very helpful in planning this trip.
This was the first time to Costa Rica for my husband and me. We visited in early November for 8 nights. We chose to spend most of our time in the southern Caribbean area. An excellent choice!
We arrived at SJO around 1 pm on a Sunday. It took about an hour total to go through the long line at immigration and get our bags. We chose to stay at Hotel Le Bergerac in San Jose and pre-arranged a transfer with the hotel. Our very pleasant driver was waiting for us at the airport. All went quite smoothly.
Hotel Le Bergerac is lovely. Our room was very spacious, clean, and comfortable. We had a small private patio with a table and chairs. All the staff were quite friendly and helpful. A very nice introduction to this beautiful country. We had a light dinner at the hotel restaurant which was delicious, and service was great. The typical breakfast (complimentary) in the hotel in the beautiful outdoor dining area was perfect. Excellent coffee, delicious fruits, gallo pinto (very flavorful beans and rice), plantains.
We were promptly picked up by Interbus at 8 am and dropped off at Hotel Banana Azul around 1:30 pm. So glad we didn't rent a car. The drivers on that road are fearless. Better to just sit back and enjoy the ride over the beautiful mountains.
We were greeted at Banana Azul by David, who was just great throughout our stay there. Banana Azul was an excellent choice for us (see my TA review). Had a yummy mojito and enjoyed the beautiful garden, koi and turtles in the pond, and all the birds, while waiting for our ocean room to be ready. The room was clean, showers hot, the bed comfortable, and the balcony a nice spot to relax.
It doesn't get a whole lot better than hanging out at the beach here. With only 14 rooms at the hotel, and essentially little else in the immediate vicinity, there were few people at the beach throughout the day. It's a soft brown sand, warm water, and lots of waves. There are lounge chairs and umbrellas, all well kept, and incredibly friendly beach service.
There's a good restaurant on site at the hotel. Each night was a different offering for dinner (with meat, fish and vegetarian options).
The hotel supplies plug-in bug repellers which must work because between those, and mosquito netting we had essentially no problems with bugs in our room. Easily fell asleep with the fan in the room keeping us cool. It gets dark very early here.
