January 2013 Trip - Itinerary

Heading there next month and trying to finalize the itinerary. Going to be there for 14 days mid-January. So far it looks like this:

Day 1: Arrive evening in SJO. So only thing is restaurant and bars.

Day 2: Rafting Pacuare.

Day 3: Drive to Manuel Antonio early morning. Spend the day surfing and seeing the town.

Day 4: Drive to Puerto Jimenez. Base camp for Corcovado hike.

Day 5-7: Hike Corcovado with 2 nights in Sirena Ranger Station.

Day 8: Drive to Jaco early morning. Spend the day surfing and seeing the town.

Day 9-12: Drive to Tamarindo early morning. Spend 4 days.

Day 12-14: Leave Tamarindo early morning. MONTEVERDE or ARENAL?

Day 15: Fly back home.

The main thing was to go rafting, hiking, and surfing. Day 12-14 is open and undecided. What is more of a must see... Monteverde cloud forest or hot springs/waterfalls/volcano in Arenal? Both are on the way back to SJO. So it made sense to see at least one of these wonders of CR.

Go to Arenal as there are more activities to choose from, and it is also easier to drive to SJO. If not already set on going to Tamarindo check Montezuma or Santa Teresa, both known to have great surfing and great vibe.

Way, way, way, way too many stops for that time period. Driving distances to/from the Osa make the Jaco/Manuel Antonio stops unworkable/undesireable.

I) Skip Manuel Antonio and just head straight to Osa. Also, it makes a lot more sense to fly in/out of the Osa than driving.

2) Skip either Jaco or Tamarindo--doesn't make sense to spend time traveling to both. Again, I would recommend flying from the Osa.

3) Arenal vs Monteverde--purely a matter of personal taste. Personally, having been exposed to the heat humidity of the Osa etc, I would probably opt for the cooler, higher elevation of Monteverde, but again it's a matter of taste and what you want to experience.

I agree with Racandee

Since surfing seems important, skip Monteverde and Arenal, and do Rincon de la Vieja , since it is closer to Tamarindo.

Enjoy Costa Rica !!!
