Costa Rica Itinerary for 7-night/8-day trip

Our 3 adult children will join us for week's vacation to Costa Rica in 2013. We need recommendations on the best/cheapest time to travel and on an itinerary that will ensure we see/experience as much as possible of the country in the short time we have. We would need 2 rooms - 1 for 2 and 1 for 3 of us. We probably wouldn't mind driving ourselves around. We're interested in hiking Arenal Volcano, experiencing some hot springs and a canopy tour, spending some time on the coast and taking surf lessons for a day, touring a rainforest, viewing wildlife and triopical habitat, possibly taking in the La Paz Waterfall Gardnes, and whitewater rafting. Any suggestions on an itinerary that could work all these things in at an affordable cost?

It is a popular itinerary...

SJO...Arenal...Monteverde...Manuel Antonio...SJO...

From SJO to Arenal...about 3 hours ride...a lot places to stay...check Los Lagos...Silencio del Campo...Lost Iguana...great soft adventure tours...great hot springs...

From there you can take the jeep boat jeep to Monteverde... check Rustic Lodge or hotel El

Then a ride to Manuel Antonio...great park to see wild life...many places to stay depending on your budget..

All transfers can be around $ 529.00 forcall of you...or rent a car...and hit the road...

I'd leave out La Paz Gardens if you are trying to keep to a budget and hike to some of the country's stunning waterfalls for free. La Paz is pretty but rather over priced IMO. Have a great adventure!

Thanks so much for your quick response, Roadadvisor. Are there any travel agents you would recommend to help us firm up the plan? Is there a particular time of year you'd suggest we make the trip (for best conditions AND lowest cost)?

The best time to travel, finding the best rates is May or the beginning of June, with less chances of rain, or Sept Oct with more chances of rain.

Tamarindo is the place for surf lessons and there are many options of hotels to stay.

There is an option to Arenal and that is Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, which is active and nice to explore. You can read more about it in the forum.
