last minute trip... could use some help!

Hi all. We are heading down to CR, flying in and out of Liberia, the 1st through the 13th. We have 2 daughters, ages 3 and 6. As it stands right now, we have reserved a condo in Playa Famingo for a week, and have 2 nights reserved at Los Lagos Resort in Arenal after that. We still have 3 nights unspoken for. We will have a car.

My question is with our young daughters, should we do an itinerary like this, doing day trips on our own and trying to find a couple of guided tours or do we bag this whole itinerary and splurge for a planned trip with a company where we just show up. I'm not sure if our girls are old enough for that to be a viable option, but trying to figure out what to do is stressing me out!!

If you think we should do Flamingo, etc. on our own, can you suggest some day trips or destinations we should plan on? I've sort of ruled out Monteverde based on some suggestions due to weather, packing, and young kids. Thanks so much for any advice.

Don't stress, you're going to have an amazing trip!

You can easily make day trips to local towns and beaches with your own vehicle. To the south you can visit Playa Avellanas (furthest point from Flamingo at around 45 minutes drive), Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Conchal and Brasilito. To the north some beautiful smaller beaches including Potrero, Penca, Prieta, Dante, Sugar Beach. Maybe factor in a couple of organized tours so you guys also get a rest from driving, and you'll learn a lot about the country and wildlife from the guides - Rincon de la Vieja (rainforest area) and Palo Verde (wetlands river boat cruise-no hiking, so great for the kids) are great day trips. Also don't miss the sunset sailing cruises.

You can stock up on food supplies at Auto Mercado in Tamarindo, or Super Compro in Huacas. Local restaurants include Mar y Sol (book for sunset), Coco Loco (right on the beach) and Maries in Flamingo. Coconut Beach Club in Surfside, with beach loungers and swimming pool is a great place for families to hang out, as is Lolas Norte at Danta.

With the extra nights, I'd reconsider a couple of nights at Monteverde-its a very special place. Also add on another night in Arenal as 2 nights isn't really long enough to get the most from this area.
